The National Psychosis Unit is a specialist mixed- gender 18 bedded inpatient service for working age adults, based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital. We provide 24-hour care and treatment to people from across the country, and sometimes from further afield, helping people with severe and enduring mental ill health, specialising in treatment resistant and treatment intolerant psychosis.


Applying the latest research evidence, our team support people in their treatment and recovery from enduring psychosis. We help people to achieve improved mental and physical health outcomes, greater autonomy, and increased independence, as well as reducing future re-admission to hospital. Working closely with commissioners, many of our patients step down from our service to inpatient rehab or supported living placements, often after spending years in hospitals over the course of mental illness.





We are seeking to recruit someone who can lead and inspire, demonstrates good standards of clinical nursing skills/experience and is keen to develop these qualities in others. You will advise and deliver high quality, safe nursing care and be key to development and implementation of the nursing development training programme on our ward. You will be responsible for supporting the day to day running of our ward including role modelling high standards of care, reviewing referrals, service development, promoting good practice, maintaining patient and staff safety, completing weekly and monthly audits, supporting the ward to maintain accreditation, rostering, monitoring KPIs, reviewing incident reports and much more.

You will be an excellent role model and provide leadership that inspires the nursing team. You will demonstrate your expert knowledge and high standards of clinical practice. You will work alongside the ward manager in maintaining professional and high standards of care to our patients.

The National Psychosis Unit is an 18 bedded specialist inpatient service for adults diagnosed with treatment resistant and complex schizophrenia spectrum disorders and/or where the diagnosis is unclear. It is 24-hour nursing staffed and provides a service to male and female service users, aged 18+ years, in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. There is a variable length of stay for service users on the unit, although typically admission lengths are in the range of six to nine months. Throughout their admission, service users can access a broad range of evidence based, innovative and recovery focused interventions provided by specialists in nursing, psychiatry, pharmacy, occupational therapy, social work, arts therapies, and psychology. The unit enjoys excellent research links with departments at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London and the Doctoral Clinical Training Course.

You will be based at Bethlem Royal Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, Kent, BR3 3BX. Bethlem Royal Hospital is set in beautiful grounds, consisting of ancient woodland and nature trails with free on-site parking.

The post holder will deliver, or advise on the delivery of, high quality and safe nursing care, within the specialist National Psychosis in-patient service, ensuring consistently high standards of practice and clinical excellence that comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of professional conduct. You will have successfully completed practice supervisor and assessor training and have experience of supervision, individual and team training. You work collaboratively with the nursing team to lead and inspire them towards mobilisation of nurse training and will be pivotal in-service changes. You will be supported to deliver training in-house, have a coaching style. You will lead on performance and quality within the nursing team and supervise/ appraise RMNs, Support Staff and students.

You will promote and develop clinical leadership and clinical practice and be a positive role model to junior members of the team through the practice of evidence-based care. You will be expected to support professional development through clinical appraisal and supervision and contribute to the ongoing educational programme for staff, fostering a positive learning environment.

There is a range of apprenticeships programs offered by the Trust to support your professional development. Funding for long courses as part of continued personal development is available after 1 year in post. We ensure individual and peer supervision, alongside reflective practice.
