An exciting opportunity for a Clinical Charge Nurses (Band 6) has arisen on Johnson PICU - Intensive Acute , Ladywell Unit . This is an opportunity to work within one of the highest turnover male acute wards within SLAM. Within this role you will have chance to develop a broad portfolio of transferable clinical skills as well as management experience. We are passionate about providing the best clinical care to our patients and you would be expected to contribute to the innovative practice on the ward and to on-going service development as per local, Trust and National requirements.
We are a 15 bedded male acute admissions ward where you will gain experience from working with service users with the most acute and often complex mental health presentations. This would allow you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required to care for those with some of the most challenging needs. You are guaranteed to gain experience in shaping the service and implement new policies. The management team would provide you with robust support in this role as well as for progression in career development!
Working as part of a multi –disciplinary team you will have excellent communication skills and team working abilities. A key role of the Clinical Charge Nurse is to lead by example and be a role model for the nursing team. We are looking for an individual who is able to support junior staff and students in their professional development, through excellent and effective clinical leadership and sharing of knowledge.
You will work very closely with the ward manager and other Clinical Charge Nurses to ensure that the unit maintains the highest standard of care provision and safe level of staffing. The post holder will have a role in all aspects of service development and improvement. In return our service will provide you with high levels of supervision and support during your working career with us and provide you with personal development plans to help you develop in this role.
You will
develop confidence in assessing risk on a formal and informal basis and be able to balance this effectively with acting in the least restrictive way, fostering a safe yet therapeutic service.
It is essential you have an understanding of the challenges that face nurses caring for individual's with mental health difficulties today and be able to demonstrate resilience and empathy. Most important to us is that you have a commitment and passion to want to be part of an excellent service.

Lewisham Hospital is based in south east London, zone 3 and is close to the beautiful green open spaces of Ladywell fields park and Lewisham park. It is within walking distance to the vibrant high-street with shops and restaurants and located within walking distance from Ladywell, Hither Green, Catford and Crofton Park overland stations. As Clinical Charge Nurse you will undertake the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, leading and overseeing standards and quality of care. You will co-ordinate service users timely progress through the care pathway . This will involve close working with referrers and commissioners alongside the wider MDT, and in addition our partners in care; including service users and carers.
You will clinically supervise and appraise RMNs, Support Staff and students.
You will work closely with the Ward Manager to provide full clinical and managerial leadership to ensure the effective provision, management and
development of service delivery, whilst encouraging a person-centred, therapeutic environment for our patients. To oversee the assessment,
planning, implementation and evaluation of care given to a group of service users, and ensure records associated with this process are
maintained. As a Clinical Charge nurse you will also act as a named nurse or inpatient care co-ordinator. This may include the co-ordination of
care of service users liasing with other members of the multidisciplinary team where necessary. In your role you will be expected to carry out
clinically supervise and appraise junior staff and students. In your role you will carry out nursing procedures to a standard that ensures safe and
effective care, and complies with The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct. Here in Lewisham your role will also entail
you being the unit holder (Duty Senior Nurse).
The Clinical Charge Nurse role is suitable for Registered Nurses who have successfully completed preceptorship and have registered as an
approved NMC mentor.
The post holder will deliver, or advise on the delivery of, high quality safe nursing care, ensuring consistently high standards of practice and
clinical excellence which comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of professional conduct.
As a Clinical Charge Nurse you will promote and develop clinical leadership and clinical practice and be a positive role model to junior members of
the team through the practice of evidence-based care.
You will be expected to support professional development through clinical appraisal and supervision and contribute to the ongoing educational
programme for staff, fostering a positive learning environment. Your professional and personal development will include further postgraduate
study i.e Management and leadership.
