Malvern Unit – Male Low Secure

Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, Brooklands Hospital

Brooklands Hospital is a specialist service, providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to people with a learning disability.

We are seeking to recruit several Health Care Assistants to join us in delivering high quality, compassionate care on our Male Low secure unit.

13 beds for men with a learning disability who have may have offended and require treatment in hospital, the patients may have transitioned down from our medium secure unit or come into hospital directly from the community. The focus of the Unit is to provide patients with treatment and learning opportunities which will minimize the impact of their learning disability and other diagnosis. The treatment will address their offending behaviour, through recognizing and managing their own risks and equip them with meaningful skills for future life. This will be achieved through providing a therapeutic environment and treatment which fosters trust and encourages self-esteem. A stable skilled team and a defined treatment pathway are essential in achieving these aims.

We need a team that can support in maintaining physical, procedural, and relational security.

To support our patients both on and off the unit, this may be with daily living skills, activities or attending patient meetings. you will also escort bot hon and off the hospital grounds.

The unit has a craft room and patients attend activities on the grounds such as horticulture , sports , click sessions, walking groups and the onsite gym.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience of mental health and/or learning disabilities, preferably possess a NVQ in Care.

Take a role for care delivery under the direction of qualified nurse/deputy/unit manager.
Actively encourage patients to become involved in all aspects of their lifestyle.


This includes the monitoring and updating person centred plans.
Support patients to identify their own health needs and support them
accessing health professionals and facilities.
Identify and provide practical and emotional support for patients to engage in a range of everyday tasks, which include supporting patients with their
personal hygiene needs, cooking, shopping, cleaning, managing finances,
budgeting and all aspects of patient engagement.


The post holder will support patients to access and participate in social,
leisure, educational and occupational activities within the unit and the wider community. This will involve escorting patients away from the unit following a full risk assessment.
Identify possible risk situations and report them to the manager and follow risk assessments.

All staff will be trained to an agreed level of Safety Intervention Training.
Once this training has been achieved, the staff member will be expected to
respond to incidents that may include physical aggression which as a last
resort may result in restraint. To act as a key worker for patients.
Perform and record clinical observations in line with Trust policy.
To have knowledge or be prepared to learn about the CQC requirements
within an inpatient setting.

All staff will be trained to an agreed level of managing violence and
aggression, accredited Safety intervention training (SIT) Once this training
has been achieved, the staff member will be expected to respond to incidents such as physical aggression and restraint.

The post holder will be required to use a computer.
The use of routine medical equipment may be required to monitor physical
observation as directed by the qualified nurse.
