The Department of Neurology at the Royal London Hospital is a vibrant and expanding department, embedded in the culturally diverse district of East London. An opportunity has arisen to employ a Clinical Fellow in Neurology, grade ST1 or above. This post would primarily cover the Neurology Programmed Investigation Unit/Day Case Unit at the Royal London Hospital, based on ward 11D. This would be a good opportunity for a junior doctor with an interest in and/or experience in neurology to gain further experience and training in a busy and established teaching hospital. This post would not include any on call or out of hours work, and is tenable for 6 months (in the first instance).

There is the potential for less than full time employment, i.e part time.Neurology Clinical Trials work is co-located on 11D and the department engages in a lot of research. There is the opportunity for the Clinical Fellow to spend some of their time working on Clinical Trials and other academic work within this post.

The Clinical Fellow will be the key point of clinical contact for patients seen on the Neurology Programmed Investigation Unit/Day case ward. They will be assisted in this role by the ward team, which includes co-ordinators and nursing staff, along with neurology SHOs and SpRs.

They will be expected to perform the following procedures, after suitable training and assessment:

- Lumbar puncture

- GON block (following training)

- Specialist bloods including genetic testing

- Skin biopsies

They will also be expected to assess patients attending for day case infusions where requested by nursing staff. There are specialist nurses in Parkinson’s, MS and Epilepsy. Teaching is integral to all medical posts within the neurology department, and the postholder will be expected to contribute to medical student teaching where feasible.

They will be supported to attend neurology outpatient clinics. There are numerous additional educational opportunities at the Royal London Hospital which the post-holder will be encouraged to attend. Study leave is available as provided for under the Terms and Conditions of Service and Hospital Medical and Dental Staff.
