Located in the vibrant University City of Cambridge, Springbank Ward at Fulbourn Hospital provides exceptional career development opportunities in the recovery focused care of adults experiencing difficulties associated with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder.
We are currently looking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated band 7 Occupational Therapist to join our Springbank team, to provide an innovative and forward-thinking service as we continue to develop and improve our unique Personality Disorder Service.
Springbank is a 12-bed treatment and recovery focused ward within the Fulbourn Adult Acute In-patient service. With an admission pathway of up to 12 months, we aim to provide a therapeutic environment offering planned care and treatment focusing on Psychosocial Interventions, DBT skills, and individual Recovery Plans.
With a disorder often arising from psychosocial adversity we focus on proactive, targeted interventions focused on supporting individuals to build a meaningful life through engagement in work or other meaningful activity, through established links with the Cambridge Recovery College.
The focus during the stay on the ward is on-going assessment, treatment, care, and recovery, enabling service users to attain a position in which they feel safe and able to take on the challenges that exist for them in the community.
We believe in truly collaborative care, support and positive risk-taking and involve our service users in the decision-making process.
We are seeking to recruit a caring and compassionate Occupational Therapist to provide high-quality care to our patients on Springbank and in return, we will provide you with excellent personal and career development opportunities. As an Occupational Therapist, you will deliver specialist occupational therapy assessments and interventions including supporting access to vocational rehabilitation, occupation focused group work, sensory strategies, reablement work, functional assessments and vocation focussed intervention.
Working within the acute care services at Springbank will give post holders the opportunity to practice a full range of core mental health skills focusing specifically on discharge planning, community liaison and support for service users and carers during the discharge planning process.
We are keen to support and develop our staff with CPD options and encourage promotional opportunities within the Trust. The service provides an in-house education programme and we have close links with Anglia Ruskin University. The ward embraces ongoing training as a part of daily work. This includes both peer group training and profession-specific cascade learning.
We also offer regular individual and group supervision and the opportunity to complete Dialectical Behavioural Therapy training.
In addition, we offer a 5-day induction on commencement in the post, a fully supportive local induction programme for all new staff and professional leadership programmes for experienced staff through the NHS Academy.

- To apply an expert level of understanding of occupation to the development of the ward based occupational therapy roles.
- To promote meaningful occupation within all aspects of ward routine and service delivery to support recovery, resilience & self management.
- To take an active role in the development of a refreshed occupational therapy pathway within in-patient areas, harnessing new ways of working for occupational therapists.
- To provide professional leadership for the in-reach & ward based occupational therapy services, ensuring that high quality practice is delivered that produces meaningful and demonstrable outcomes, based on best evidence.
- To contribute to the setting of quality standards and the delivery of an evaluation of the ward based occupational therapy roles.
- To provide leadership for occupational therapy staff within in-patient areas, and a positive role model around new ways of working and professional relationships.
- To recognise the value in the full range of professional perspectives, and to be able to integrate these perspectives into own and others practice (this may include psychological & nursing approaches to strengthen the multi-disciplinary ethos within in-patient areas).
- To work in partnership with nursing leadership, based on the principles of collective & collaborative leadership, to strengthen the multi-disciplinary ethos within in-patient areas
- To provide highly specialist occupational therapy assessments, advice and interventions using advanced, clinical reasoning skills.
- To work as an autonomous practitioner.
- To keep the person receiving services at the centre of care, using shared decision making principles.
- To provide specialist advice to professionals and managers, including in relation to professional governance.
- To provide leadership to ward based occupational therapy staff to support the development of their generic and specialist skills, in keeping with professional & regulatory standards.
- To provide support and education to non-registered staff and students.
- To provide a high standard of occupational therapy within in-patient services.
- To promote the expansion of occupational therapy roles and perspectives, and raise awareness of the relationship between occupation and health, demonstrating value for money and the avoidance/reduction of in-patient care (based on recovery principles) where possible.
