We are seeking a highly motivated Lead Speech & Language Therapist to offer specialist rehabilitationto our Major Trauma and Neurosurgical patients.

Collaborating with Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, Trauma & Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery in an MDT supported environment, your drive to empower patients to reach their full recovery potential will be vital to the service.

You will deliver hands-on specialist therapy, including formulating Rehabilitation Prescriptions, play an integral part in service development, lead a small team and implement best practice and quality improvement initiatives.

Working as part of the award nominated Hyperacute Rehabilitation Team (HART), you will receive professional support from a highly established, specialist SLT team. Additional unique training opportunities to develop wider knowledge of specialist skills including in house development of videofluoroscopy, Trauma Care After Resus (TCAR) training, tracheostomy and FEES competencies. You will work closely with highly specialist services such as Frenchay Brain Injury Rehab Centre, Specialist Effect Charity and Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre.

Successful post holders should have:
• Masters level qualification or equivalent experience in Neurosurgery and Major Trauma
• Strong post-registration experience in neurorehabilitation
• Demonstrable team leadership and service development experience

Working amongst a team of specialist multi-disciplinary therapists and medical professionals to assess and deliver rehabilitation for Neurosurgical and polytrauma patients with complex needs. This includes patients with musculoskeletal injuries, spinal cord injuries and all acquired brain injuries.

The role involves hands on therapy alongside development of bespoke Rehabilitation Prescriptions, Key Working Major Trauma patients and contributing to service delivery projects. The post holders will support the Major Trauma Service with achieving key performance indicators in addition service development and providing clinical supervision, mentoring, line management and support to junior staff working in the HART.

• To provide a highly specialist speech and language therapy (SLT) assessment, diagnosis and treatment service to adults with communication and swallowing difficulties.
• To provide leadership within the Speech and Language Therapy team by providing clinical supervision, mentoring, line management and support to junior staff working in the HART.
• To provide leadership within the wider multidisciplinary team by representing Speech and Language Therapy at meetings and working groups covering quality governance, service evaluation and service planning.
• Be an integral part of the Major Trauma and HART service, providing cover Monday – Friday but this may evolve to cover (on a rota) 7 days a week.
• To work as a senior level practitioner under the RCSLT Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) competency framework.
• IR(ME)R trained and achievement of level 3 competency in videofluoroscopy (VFS) in accordance with the RCSLT guidelines for performing SLT led VFS swallowing examinations.
• Provide a key worker service to patients and families during and after hospital stay. This includes education of the rehabilitation management of traumatic injuries, signposting to services and providing psychological support
• Complete rehabilitation prescriptions (RP) within national service specification timescales.
• To take part in service development, research and evaluation of the major trauma and HART.
• Work with the TARN data coordinators to provide accurate, timely data required for TARN submission
• Be a positive role model and display a positive attitude within the division, trust, network and wider services.
• To provide specialist communication services for patients including involving outside agencies as appropriate regarding provision of alternative and augmentative communication
• To provide training opportunities for the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in the area of communication and swallowing difficulties arising from major trauma and neurosurgical conditions
• Engage in regular CPD/training opportunities provided by MT.
