To act as an expert practitioner/ role model, providing professional leadership and support to junior and International Midwives in their preceptorship period, to develop and maintain clinical practice knowledge and skills. Enhancing the clinical competence of junior midwives and improving the provision of the fundamentals of care.

To spend 90% of time in the clinical setting supporting preceptor midwives.

• To be an expert autonomous practitioner
• To provide clinical leadership and support to preceptorship midwives within labour ward, birth centre and clinical areas.
• Facilitate changes in midwifery practice which improves the quality of care to woman and their families.
• Support preceptorship midwives to complete their preceptorship competencies in a timely manner and be part of the assessment process.
• Establish and maintain effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
• To embrace national recommendations in relation to midwifery practice and lead on developments as a result of these recommendations.

• To demonstrate a high level of leadership and maintain good working relationships within the maternity unit.
• To use midwifery expertise as a resource to clinically support midwives, promoting normality as well as providing appropriate guidance for high risk care.
• To be available to midwives to provide expert advice on all matters pertaining to midwifery practice.
• To be an expert in CTG interpretation and support junior midwives to become experts themselves.
• To be able to identify with help from other colleagues, who requires support and what level of support is required.
• Be able to flex your roster to enable you to work with the junior midwives who require support.
• To act as a change agent particularly with regard to the introduction of evidence based practice by sharing information and expertise within the labour ward.
• To support midwives on development programmes.
• To provide education and training in practice, to include skills, drills and practical skills necessary for the midwife’s extended role.
• Participate in teaching on the multidisciplinary in-house training programme.
• To take part in the multidisciplinary weekly case reviews and share learning from these.
• To plan, implement and support key projects as identified by the Head of Midwifery and matrons in line with trust wide/national initiatives.
• Plan and facilitate client care in complex/unusual cases in liaison with obstetric consultant.
• Evaluate changes in midwifery practice at local level.
• To work with the labour ward manager, the labour ward team leaders and the obstetric consultants to reduce the intervention rate on labour ward.
• To participate in audit, risk management, quality, practice and education initiatives and drive and support the implementation of change as necessary.
• To be an active member of the following forums in a clinical expert capacity– Labour Ward Forum, QIPS, Audit meetings
• To devise and plan newly qualified Midwives rotations and update the rosters accordingly.
• As part of escalation within Maternity you will participate in the on-call Rota
