The need for this role and the difference you’ll make

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer and the cancer that takes the second highest numbers of lives every year in the UK. Chances of successful treatment are far greater if the cancer is diagnosed and treated at an early stage. However, Greater Manchester is currently failing the cancer waiting time standard for colorectal cancer, with 65.8% of patients receiving their treatment within 62 days (national target is 85%). Furthermore, by 2020 the new faster diagnosis performance standard of confirmation of cancer diagnosis (or no cancer) by day 28 following first referral from GP will be implemented. Access to timely and effective cancer services is crucial for patient experience and outcomes. The Colorectal Best Timed Pathway project aims to ensure that wherever a patient lives, they experience the same level of care and have the same chance of receiving a definitive yes/no cancer diagnosis no longer than 28 days after urgent referral.

By becoming a Colorectal CNS you will be playing a lead role in establishing and developing colorectal service for the Trust. Led by the colorectal clinical lead for the Trust, you will support all aspects of the new service, including communicating regularly with patients. This will speed up the early stages of the pathway, save OPA resources, allow earlier diagnosis and lead to improved outcomes for patients.

Your role will be part of a wider project across GM establishing STT services for colorectal cancer, with the aim of meeting incoming 28 day cancer targets and ensuring patients receive a diagnosis for cancer as quickly as possible. You will therefore be part of a community of Colorectal Triage CNSs establishing these services at the same time in Trusts across Greater Manchester and will be encouraged to build relationships and learn from each other.

We are looking for a proactive, motivated CNS who is enthusiastic about establishing new services that will make a significant positive difference to patient outcomes.
