Are you an experienced Mental Health Nurse, looking for your next role? Why not join us in this Monday to Friday 9am-5pm role based at Royal Berkshire Hospital? You’ll use your skills and experience caring for our patients who are older adults (65+) admitted to the hospital. We’re a well-established team where the work is varied and dynamic and there are many opportunities with specialist departments, including diabetes, heart failure, oncology, stroke, care of the elderly and palliative medicine.

You will be well suited to this role if you have either community or inpatient older adults experience, and you are passionate about providing mental health care for older people. You will need a good understanding of and interest in mental health in the context of declining physical health in old age too.

You will be working within a supportive multidisciplinary team of mental health practitioners, including psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and a consultant psychiatrist. The older adult service (65+) is a small team, working alongside the adult (18-65) psychological medicine team as part of the Psychological Medicine Service within Royal Berkshire Hospital. The overall service is Core24, and PLAN accredited.

The team supports patients on all medical wards across the hospital. Patients are primarily presenting with mental health or cognitive difficulties in the context of declining physical health and/or neurological or neurodegenerative conditions.
• You will undertake comprehensive initial assessments of the mental health needs of older people who are currently receiving treatment for physical health problems within a general hospital setting taking into account their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.
• You will plan, facilitate, deliver and evaluate specialist person-centred care and treatment for these patients and where appropriate include the views of their family and carers.
• Providing short term mental health interventions to older people referred to Psychological Medicine.
• Communicating with, educating and supporting carers as required.
• Liaising effectively with other agencies providing services to older people with mental health needs, ensuring that all relevant personnel are aware of any changes in care/treatment or patient needs.

Working pattern + Service operating hours

The Service operates Monday to Friday during standard business hours. This role is full time and requests for a working pattern of 9-5, however flexibility in the hours will be considered.

The “must haves” for you to be considered for this role:
1. RMN or equivalent Professional Qualification.
2. Broad experience, gained over a minimum of 2 years, acquired by caring for Older People with mental health needs in a range of community and/or inpatient settings.
3. Able to evidence good communications and prioritisation skills.
4. Evidence of ability to undertake good assessment, risk assessment and management.
