I am looking for a kind, calm, and patient Personal Assistant /Support Worker to support me in getting out into the community and doing things I enjoy. This includes visiting my safe spaces—especially spending time with horses, which I love.
I experience extreme anxiety around going out, particularly with crowds and noise, so I need someone who can gently support me in overcoming these fears at my own pace.
About me:
- I have a diagnosis of microcephaly and ASD
- I can find communication difficult at first and may not speak straight away, as I have selective mutism. I use a mix of speech, signing, and a tablet to communicate, and as I get to know you and feel comfortable, I will begin to open up more.
- I can interpret things very literally and may need extra time to process information. Small things like noise or busy environments can feel overwhelming.
- I have specific dislikes that I can find triggering.
- I am a thoughtful and creative person—I recently crocheted a horse! I also love animals, my horses, my fish and my Chihuahua are a very important part of my life.
What I’m looking for:
• Someone calm, patient, and understanding
• Honest and trustworthy (honesty is very important to me)
• Willing to build trust and rapport gradually
• Able to support me in a clear, reassuring, and consistent way
• Understanding of anxiety and communication differences
The role:
This is about companionship as much as support—helping me feel safe, understood, and confident enough to enjoy the world around me.
If you’re someone who values kindness, patience, and making a genuine difference in someone’s life, I’d love to hear from you.
-
Duties include:
- Other relevant duties as required
- Transportation
- Companionship
Candidate qualities:
- Respectful of the employer's privacy and confidentiality
- Reliable with good timekeeping
- Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
- Hygienic, tidy and well organised
- Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
- Patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills
- Honest and cheerful
- Creative
- Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard
- Must be comfortable with pets
- Able to always work to high standards of health & safety
- Non smoker strongly preferred
Notes:
All applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check if required.
If you are successful in your application for this position, you will be either engaged directly or employed by the individual employer and not by Independent Lives. The role may be offered on an employed or self-employed basis, depending on the suitability and agreement with the employer. If the role is employed, you will be entitled to holiday pay and issued an employment contract.
Please note: If you do not hear back within three weeks of applying, unfortunately your application has not been successful on this occasion.
