Healthcare Assistant, HCA - Outpatient Services Reports To Clinical Lead Outpatient Services Service Overview The service operates as a predominantly adult-focused private outpatient service with a limited and clearly defined paediatric provision. The post holder is responsible for supporting the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care within outpatient clinics under the direction of registered clinicians and within the boundaries of delegated competency, organisational policy, and professional standards. The post holder may be required to support other clinical departments in response to operational need, while maintaining service standards and regulatory compliance. Scope of Role The post holder will work under the supervision of registered nurses and clinicians, providing clinical and non-clinical support to ensure the smooth running of outpatient services. The post holder must work within the limits of their competence, training, and delegated responsibilities and must escalate any concerns relating to patient safety, deterioration, competence, or scope immediately to the Clinical Lead or Registered Manager. The post holder must not undertake any clinical activity unless trained, assessed as competent, and authorised to do so. Clinical Competencies Clinical observations and recording of vital signs Recognition and escalation of patient deterioration Adult phlebotomy (where trained and authorised) Chaperoning duties Infection prevention and control procedures Stock control and equipment checks Basic wound care and dressing support in line with training and competency sign-off Assisting clinicians during minor procedures Accurate documentation and record keeping Supporting safe medicines management processes in line with organisational policy Checking stock levels, expiry dates, and storage conditions of medicines held within clinic areas Prompt escalation of medicines discrepancies or concerns to registered staff General Responsibilities Maintain patient confidentiality and handle information in accordance with data protection requirements and organisational policy. Promote equality, diversity, dignity, and respect for all patients, visitors, and colleagues. Support health and safety procedures, including infection prevention, manual handling, fire safety, and incident reporting. Prepare, maintain, and restock clinic rooms and treatment areas to ensure readiness for safe service delivery. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues, and external professionals in a professional manner. Maintain a clean, safe, and organised clinical environment. Person Specification Essential Previous experience as a Healthcare Assistant or similar care role Experience in outpatient, ambulatory, GP, or acute healthcare settings Competent in clinical observations Essential wound care competency with formal sign-off Good communication and interpersonal skills Understanding of confidentiality, dignity, and patient-centred care Knowledge of infection prevention and control Understanding of safeguarding adults and children Person Specification Desirable Adult phlebotomy competency Experience in private healthcare Knowledge of CQC standards Awareness of safe medicines management procedures
