An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Resus Lead Nurse to join our Emergency Department here at Whiston Hospital

The Resus Lead Nurse will oversee the resuscitation area within the Emergency Department, leading highly specialized care for critically ill patients. They provide clinical leadership, expert nursing advice, and supervision to staff during high-acuity events, ensuring adherence to emergency protocols and high-quality patient outcomes

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Due to current service demands, we are only able to consider applicants who have relevant UK experience. Candidates must also be available to commence employment immediately or within a very short timeframe. We regret that we cannot progress applications that do not meet these essential requirements.
• The post-holder will be responsible for maintaining the provision of a 5 start evidence-based Resuscitation service in the Emergency Department of Whiston Hospital.
• The role will be approximately 50% clinical ‘hands on’ and 50% teaching/training* and both elements will also incorporate aspects of stock review, equipment functionality and overall administrative management of the Resus area.
• 50% = indicative only and the post-holder is encouraged to concentrate on the most important aspects of the role as decided by themselves.

The Emergency Department located in a purpose-built department within Whiston Hospital. The ED has approximately 98,000 attendances per year. There is a dedicated Paediatric ED, Resuscitation Room and Emergency Assessment Unit all co-located and supported by an Observation ward and Ambulatory Emergency Care unit. The service works closely with and is supported by the Alcohol and Psychiatric Liaison services, mobility assessment team and a dedicated social services team all co-located within the ED. The post-holder will be expected to work as part of a dedicated Senior ED team supporting a minor injury / illness work stream largely independent of medical intervention and within an expanding and evolving range of presentations.

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

KEY DUTIES
• Provision of specialist knowledge, providing technical expert advice in relation to resuscitation subjects across all of ED and other areas as requested and agreed by the line manager and taking active part in most resuscitation efforts whilst on duty
• Writing, updating and advising in relation to resuscitation policy
• Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge base and sharing and disseminating new techniques, guidance and recommendations across ED resus and other high acuity areas
• Establish and implement a contemporary and relevant training curriculum that encompasses (e.g.):
• All aspects of resuscitation (adult and paediatric) and associated subjects
• Basic Life Support (BLS), Immediate Life Support (ILS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) Do Not Attempt – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNA CPR)
• Situation Background Assessment Recommendation (SBAR), Emergency Oxygen, Anaphylaxis, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Modified Early Warning System (MEWS)
• The post holder will also take an active role in identifying major trauma patients for inclusion in the TARN database. They will promote the Major Trauma Network patient pathway and facilitate movement of patients through the local trauma system onto definitive care
• Undertake and record quality monitoring activities, especially those relating to compliance with the Resuscitation Council (UK)
• Take the strategic lead for resuscitation related Audit – including Transfer activity MEWS and the resuscitation response for the whole of the trust
• Organise, advise and deliver resuscitation elements of ED and other rotational Medical Staff orientation and education
• Advising on the management of critical care transfers within the trust as and when required

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain Professional Registration
• Adhere to relevant Code of Practice of Professional body
• Take a lead role in the development of written standards, guidelines and policies, pathways within the specialist area in the hospital setting.
• Contribute to service development through quality and audit initiatives.
• Maintain and participate in continual professional development including keeping abreast of changes and developments in resuscitation procedure and equipment and attend or lead in-service training and courses as required.
• Ensure mechanisms are in place to routinely monitor the quality and cost effectiveness of service provision and take immediate action when shortfalls in performance are identified.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage own workload and participate in clinical supervision as appropriate
• Appraise research and new evidence findings and advise relevant staff on impact of evidence-based practice and implementation
• Understand and manage all aspects of non-pay income and expenditure in resus so that expenditure is auditable and seen to be justified
• Understand and contribute to the wider ED management agenda – strategic and operational.
• As lead nurse within the ED resuscitation setting, participate in case reviews, investigate reported Datix, lead on SIRIs and other investigative and fact-finding activities associated with critically ill patients
• Act as the key liaison for representatives of companies introducing new disposables and/or equipment in the resuscitation area and provide the directorate manager with full briefings associated with cost effectiveness and qualitative improvements
• Manage own workload and participate in clinical supervision as appropriate

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Educate and support carers and contribute to the assessment of carers needs. This includes the production and maintenance of explanatory texts that help carers understand what is happening to their relatives in terms of invasive resuscitation procedures (e.g., intubation)
• Network, collaborate and co-work with other resuscitation leads and services both nationally and locally
• Maintain and develop a specialised knowledge of current resuscitation and ED critical care techniques and practices
• Assess the training needs of Clinical staff within the resuscitation area setting, in terms of evidence-based approaches and therapeutic management of complex illnesses and injury
• Organise, co-ordinate and undertake training to Clinical staff within ED and the Hospital, in a range of intervention strategies
• Take a lead role in giving advice on, and the development of future direction for services and treatment for the patients within the resuscitation area setting
• Contribute to the supervision and training of students on placements including students from other disciplines.
• Provide and participate in in-service and multi-disciplinary education through workshops, seminars and clinical supervision sessions

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Deliver an inspirational and motivating leadership style to other members of the team in resus
• Establish an incremental goal setting approach and culture with regular feedback to the members of the resus team on group and individual performance during resuscitation efforts
• Organise and deliver evidence based de-briefings for staff who wish following difficult, upsetting incidents
• Maintain existing excellent relationships between other teams and professionals both within and outwith ED
• Lead in developing care pathways within the ED and Hospital setting, in liaison with other professionals, which outline roles, responsibilities and therapeutic approaches for patients who have been cared for in the resuscitation area
• Take a lead role in developing innovative clinical practices, policies and procedures which can be disseminated to multi-disciplinary members in ED and Hospital clinical staff

RESEARCH & AUDIT
• Collate and review appropriate research literature
• Support individuals undertaking research and ensure dissemination and implementation of relevant findings.
• In conjunction with General Hospital Medical staff, undertake specific research/audit related to the advancement of practices in the care of resuscitation area patients
