Job summary
Bhuku Ltd is recruiting a Literacy & Numeracy Tutor to deliver an engaging, peer-led learning programme at HMP Featherstone.
This role focuses on supporting prisoners with extremely low levels of literacy and numeracy, helping them build confidence, independence and the skills needed for education, employment and resettlement.
You will lead a programme that combines direct support with the development of peer mentors, contributing to the prison’s Reading Strategy and wider reducing reoffending priorities.
Job description
You will deliver a structured programme that supports learners to:
Improve reading, writing and basic numeracy skills
Build confidence and independence in learning
Develop reading for pleasure and engagement
Strengthen budgeting and everyday numeracy skills
Progress towards further education and employment
You will also:
Deliver group sessions, workshops and 1:1 support
Recruit, train and support peer mentors to deliver literacy and numeracy support
Facilitate a peer-led model of learning across residential units, workshops and education areas
Develop and use accessible learning materials and resources
Support learners through a roll-on/roll-off model, maintaining engagement and progression
Track learner progress and provide regular feedback and reporting
Support referrals into mainstream education provision
Contribute to celebration events and recognition of learner achievement
Delivery will take place across the prison, including residential areas, education spaces and places of work.
Working pattern
Monday to Wednesday
08:00 – 17:00
10-month fixed-term contract
3 days per week delivery requirement
Person specification
Essential
Experience delivering literacy, numeracy or functional skills support
Strong communication and facilitation skills
Ability to engage learners with low confidence and complex needs
Ability to work within a secure environment and follow procedures
Willingness to complete prison vetting and induction
Desirable
Experience working in a custodial or secure setting
Teaching, training or coaching qualification
Experience supporting neurodiverse learners or those with additional needs
Experience delivering or supporting peer-led programmes
Skills and experience
You will be:
Confident delivering both 1:1 and group-based sessions
Skilled in engaging learners who may be disengaged from education
Able to train and support peer mentors effectively
Organised and able to manage learner caseloads (15–30 learners at any one time)
Professional, adaptable and able to work independently
Additional information
This role is based in a Category C training and resettlement prison for adult males (21+)
Delivery supports a peer-led model aligned to the prison’s Reading Strategy
You will work closely with:

Education provider (PES)
Library services
CIAG and Neurodiversity teams
All staff must:
Pass security vetting
Complete HMPPS induction and training
Follow all prison policies and procedures
