School Medicines Assistant 27.5 hrs/week, term time only
(GLPC Grade C, SCP 4-5, (£25,185 – 25,583 pro rata = approx £16,101-£16,876 pa)
Oak Field School is a Special School for 166 pupils aged 3-19 with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities, broadly SLD (severe learning difficulties) and PMLD (profound and multiple learning difficulties). This includes some pupils with challenging behaviours linked to SLD, and some pupils with sensory and/or complex health needs. This is a permanent post, to start on Monday 1st June 2026, or as soon as possible/practicable after that. There is also the possibility of a temporary post.
We are seeking a positive, proactive and organised School Medicines Assistant, who will work as one of a pair under the direction of the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team. They will receive training in medication administration (inc orally mostly via syringe, or via gastrostomy, or less commonly via jejunostomy or naso-gastric tube) and other health procedures, and will be expected to undertake annual competency checks, carried out by NHS training team colleagues
At Oak Field, approximately 45% of pupils currently require medicines to be administered during the school day, in accordance with their agreed Medication Administration Records/Care Plans, and parent/carer permission. Some of these pupils have been prescribed multiple medicines, and others (approx 20%) may occasionally require emergency (or ‘rescue’) medication (such as buccal midazolam) to be administered. These medicines are stored centrally. Most of the pupils travel to and from school on specialised school transport, and many medicines need to be checked in and out of school daily. Many pupils need to take their medication with them when they go out of school, for example on school trips.
On a day-to-day basis, the role will include the checking in and out of medicines, and measuring and administering them to the children and young people in accordance with their agreed Medication Administration Records or Care Plans, as above; this to include short-term medicines like antibiotics. This also includes identifying, querying, and acting upon any discrepancies, and communicating with parents/carers and others, e.g. when medicines are near their expiry date and a new prescription is needed. Where appropriate, and in liaison with school staff, the post holder will also be expected to support pupils in understanding their medication needs and in the self-administration of their medicines. Experience of medicines management/administration, of working with children, of working in a school, or of working in a residential or care setting would be an advantage, as would an interest in working with children and young people with SEN.
The successful candidate will receive training in relevant areas such as Safeguarding and Child Protection. They will also be expected to be proactive in seeking and developing their own continuing professional development and will be encouraged to participate in the wider life/enrichment activities of the school.
Working hours for this post are Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, term time only (27.5 hrs/week), inc 30 mins unpaid lunchbreak. There is also the possibility of a 25hr or a 22.5hr/week contract within those hours.
Since Oak Field is a unique specialised educational setting within the City of Nottingham, and this is a unique post, we strongly advise that before you apply for this post you have a detailed look at our website (oakfieldschool.org), especially the 4-minute video and the Learning At Home tab. Then have an informal telephone conversation with Patricia Lewis (Headteacher) between 9.30am and 5pm to find out more about the role and to arrange a visit to the school during school hours, when you will be able to spend some time with our Meds Assistants. We cannot stress enough how important this is, to support your application.
Applications close at 9am on: Tuesday 05 May 2026
Provisional interview date: Week beginning Monday 11 May 2026For the Personal Statement section of the application form, please write a covering letter
