Join us as a Legal Counsel, Privacy

  • This is an opportunity for a lawyer looking to build upon their post-qualification experience (PQE) and to take on an exciting role within the NatWest Legal Policy and Oversight team
  • This role offers the advantage of a varied and extensive breadth of work, where you’ll find solutions to varied challenges on a wide range of matters

What you'll do

You’ll be managing and coordinating the delivery of legal advice and support across multiple business areas. You'll make sure that your advice is accurate, readily understandable to non-lawyers, delivered at the right time, and remains commercial while minimising legal risks.

Day-to-day, you’ll be:

  • Delivering expert, accurate and cost‑effective legal and operational advice on privacy and client confidentiality, either directly or through others
  • Ensuring advice is timely, commercial, proactive, easy for non‑lawyers to understand, and helps manage and minimise legal risk
  • Driving continuous improvement in operating practices and processes, including identifying efficiencies, improvements and cost‑reduction opportunities
  • Communicating internal and external legal advice, and providing legal input on transactions and projects, in a commercial, user‑friendly and efficient way
  • Carrying out horizon scanning activities
  • Owning and developing appropriate risk and control frameworks for the franchises and functions to meet their responsibilities

The skills you'll need

To join us in this role, you’ll need to be a qualified solicitor or barrister with experience of providing legal privacy advice. You’ll be able to draw on your experience of working with law firms and other professional advisers and have knowledge of current legal privacy issues facing banks.

We’ll also be looking for you to demonstrate:

  • In depth knowledge of privacy and client confidentiality law
  • The ability to build rapport and establish strong relationships, especially with senior colleagues
  • Good commercial awareness, excellent communication, legal research and analytical skills
  • A data protection qualification such as International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)
  • The ability to use AI tools to aid legal research and analysis
  • Strong PQE within the banking industry
