NCL Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Cancer Alliance (CA) have established an innovative and ambitious primary care strategy with an underpinning six themed programme of transformational work to improve cancer patient experience and clinical outcomes for the populations across each of the five place / borough geographies.
To support this ambitious agenda, NCL is recruiting an Camden GP Cancer Clinical Lead Leads to improve primary care clinical services with a focus on reducing cancer health inequalities, optimising screening uptake, enhancing a culture of learning and development and developing a community of primary care clinical practice.
As one of the five place based NCL GP Cancer Clinical Leads, the post holder will work alongside the wider Primary Care Programme team to providing clinical and operational leadership to the delivery of the primary care strategy for NCL, with specific focus, but not limited to, reducing cancer health inequalities, improving early diagnosis, optimising screening uptake and developing neighbourhood health across the place/borough.
The GP Cancer Clinical Lead will lead a range of projects that will improve and transform cancer services and outcomes for cancer patients across each place/borough in NCL.
The GP Cancer Clinical Lead will work with colleagues from across local primary care and other healthcare sectors to influence and drive forward clinically led improvements and embed best practice.
The post-holder will provide expert advice to the general practice and PCNs in relation to the role of GP Professionals working in cancer and will support them to deliver identified areas of work to develop and deliver the ambitions of the NCL primary care cancer strategy.
Crucially, the post holder will work responsively, enthusiastically, and flexibly, both at practice level and at Cancer Alliance level, to ensure improvements can be delivered at pace within a complex stakeholder environment.

The post holderwill work with the wider primary care programme team to agree and deliver priorities for primary care cancer in Camden and across NCL. This will include but not be limited to:
• Support the development of cancer in the local neighbourhood health agenda. Identify opportunities to link in with local neighbourhood structures (e.g. Integrators, Integrated Neighbourhood Teams).
• Support the primary care cancer and screening agenda including access/ pathway issues / delivery of services/ reducing unwarranted variation
• Support the NHS England 2026-27 cancer priorities for primary care, which include improving referral practice for suspected bowel, lung, and upper GI cancers
• Support PCNs and practices to achieve compliance with DES/QOF
• Share cancer related data (e.g. data packs) with PCNs and practices. Use data to facilitate conversations around improvement.
• Identify issues in the primary care elements of cancer and non-cancer pathways (e.g. reviewing pathways)
• Promote and support practices with new pathways and initiatives (e.g. FIT, Cancer Practice Recognition Award, breast pain pathway)
• Drive and facilitate a primary care cancer community of practice across the borough/place
• Attend NCL Primary Care Delivery Group and other key forums (e.g. catchups) as required
• Drive the delivery of the underpinning programme and key activities across the place/borough based on population health needs and health inequalities.
• Support specific projects (e.g. FIT e-Safety netting pilot) and tumour site ‘Expert Reference Groups’ (e.g. Lower GI) that support the whole NCL portfolio
• Identify examples of local, national and international best practice that can used to support the programme delivery from a GP / practice perspective.
• Maintain excellent standards of interpersonal skills and communication in a professional, courteous and friendly manner at all times, both within the organisation and with all levels of staff and with external bodies, including up to Cancer Alliance level, often providing, receiving and analysing complex and sensitive information.
• The GP Cancer Clinical Lead will have experience in general practice, a specialist interest in cancer and also have experience in primary care improvement and/or project delivery.
The post holder, in conjunction with the co-clinical director and programme lead, will regularly assess and evaluate their effectiveness in the delivery of improvements.
