Join our Team
Together for Children Sunderland is on a transformative journey to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people in Sunderland. We are an outstanding Ofsted-rated Children’s service, if you’re committed to helping children, families, and our community thrive and have the skills to support our mission, we would love to hear from you. You can learn more about us here: Together for Children.

About the role
The BSL Tutor will contribute to high quality language development and deaf education for deaf children and young people across Sunderland. The postholder will deliver Signature-accredited BSL courses to deaf pupils, their families, peers, school staff and Together for Children (TfC) colleagues, promoting BSL fluency, Deaf culture, identity, and inclusion.
The role includes teaching BSL across a wide age range—from Early Years to post-16—and delivering sessions in nurseries, schools, colleges, Family Hubs and other community venues. The tutor will work closely with Teachers of Deaf Children & Young People (ToDs), Communication Support Workers (CSWs), and partner agencies to support a linguistically rich learning environment for deaf children.
Delivery will take place during the school day, and may require flexible working and evenings, such as school Twilight sessions.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service. We will also carry out an online internet search for information that is publicly available online that might suggest that you are not fit to work with children or young people.

We want you to apply if you:
Are a native Signer or have BSL Level 6 qualification (or working towards).
Hold a qualification enabling delivery of Signature Levels 1 and 2 BSL (or equivalent), or willingness to work towards relevant assessor/tutor qualification.
Relevant teaching qualification, such as PTLLS or equivalent teaching qualification / HLTA.
Have experience of supporting the language acquisition of deaf learners, or of teaching British sign language.
