Are you passionate about delivering excellent customer service and leading teams to success? Reading Libraries are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Branch Manager to lead the team at Caversham Library and help shape a welcoming, vibrant community space for local residents.

Reading has 7 libraries, 1 home library service, and a growing digital service. The service is used by c.250,000 people every year.

About The Role:

You will be based at Caversham Library, Church Street, Reading, RG4 8AU.

Caversham Library is a busy community library; it provides traditional library services and also holds a range of activities. Activities include regular Rhymetimes for under 5s and their carers, children’s craft sessions, games clubs for adults and children as well as one off sessions. 

As the Branch Manager you will contribute to providing a best value public service by directly serving library customers and helping to meet their needs. The primary purpose of the post is to serve library customers and manage and support the team through the planning, delivery and operation of the service whilst being responsible for health and safety and the building.

You will line manage approximately three staff.

Hours of work are:
Tuesdays: 8:45am - 5:10pm 
Thursdays: 12:30pm - 7:10pm 
Fridays: 8:45am – 5:10pm
Saturdays: (2 in 3) 9:45am - 3:10pm 

Plus, an extra 4 hours to be worked on site, regularly on either Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursday mornings.

Duties include:  

Working on library desks, issuing library stock, answering enquiries, joining new members, and helping customers to access the library’s IT facilities.
Leading weekly singing sessions (Rhymetimes) and other activities 
Staff and building Management 
Good ICT, literacy, and numeracy skills are essential, but we will train you on the tools you will need. 
Maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accuracy when processing documents
Handling cash and reconciling income accurately
Good physical fitness is required as this is an active role, standing and serving customers and lifting and carrying piles of books. 
Able to communicate with a variety of different audiences to champion the importance of the library service and be adept at partnership working
To act as an evacuation officer/fire warden – on hearing the fire alarm follow procedures in a calm, professional manner, clearing the library and ensuring customers are led to safety.  

Applicants must have experience of working with the public, both children and adults and of leading and managing staff.
