Our client based close to Leicester City Centre is looking for an Electronic Assembler / Repairer to join their team in an ongoing position. You will be working on stripping down down electronic parts and assisting with the repairs alongside an experienced engineer. The work is demanding and requires a good knowledge of repairing PCBs.
Repairing boards requires significantly more expertise than standard assembly.
- Track and Pad Repair: Ability to restore damaged copper tracks and pads using conductive epoxies, foil, or jumpers.
- Precision De-soldering: Mastery of removing multi-pin components, de-soldering braids, and specialised extraction tools without damaging the PCB laminate.
- Component-Level Troubleshooting: Basic knowledge of using multi meters and oscilloscopes to identify faulty resistors, capacitors etc.
- Conformal Coating Removal: Skill in safely stripping protective coatings (acrylic, silicone, or urethane) to access components for repair.
- SMT Rework and Repair: Ability to perform precision hand soldering and rework on SMD components using microscopes and specialised rework stations
- Candidates must be able to "strip down" complex assemblies safely.
- Destructive & Non-Destructive Disassembly: Proficiency in using manual and pneumatic tools to disassemble "box-build" systems, including clearing adhesives, removing rivets, and unseating press fit components.
- Fastener Mastery: Skilled use of torque drivers, specialised bits, and removal tools for stripped or tamper-resistant screws.
- Reverse-Engineering documentation: Ability to document disassembly steps (via notes or digital photos) to ensure accurate reassembly.
- Wire Loom & Harness Stripping: Knowledge of safely De-pinning connectors and removing cable ties/shielding without nicking wire insulation.
The Ideal Candidate will have knowledge of or current certification in the following standards:
- IPO--7711/7721 (Certified IPC Specialist): This is the definitive industry standard for the Rework, Modification, and Repair of electronic assemblies.
- IPC-A-610: Essential for identifying acceptable vs. defective solder joints and board conditions.
- J-STD-OOI: Core soldering requirements, particularly for high-reliability Class 2 or Class 3 products.
Digital and Interpersonal Skills
- Engineering Feedback: Capacity to communicate recurring assembly failure points to the design team to prevent future defects.
- ESD Discipline: Strict adherence to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protocols, which is critical when handling partially disassembled, vulnerable electronics.
Physical Requirements
- Visual Acuity: Ability to work for extended periods under high-magnification microscopes.
- Fine Motor Dexterity: High-level steady-hand coordination for handling microscopic parts (
Working hours and pay
- 08.00-16.30 Monday - Thursday
- 08.00-12.15 on Friday
- Starting rate for pay is £13.00 per hour but this will increase on proof of capabilities.
