Introduction to York St John
York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of the historic city of York, and there has never been a more exciting time to join us. Central to our ambition is an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
As one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK in recent years, we have developed a new strategy for the next decade. This strategy emphasises our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to the creation of a fairer world and a more prosperous region. Inspirational learning and impactful research are at the heart of this vision, with our academic expertise recognised as our greatest asset.
The School and Campus
During a period of significant change across the higher education sector, York Business School and our London Campus have expanded their portfolio of programmes designed to prepare both domestic and international students for successful professional careers. Fundamental to our ethos is the development of the individual, alongside close collaboration with the business community to build lasting partnerships and produce distinctive, career-ready graduates.
York Business School and the London Campus benefit from a vibrant and supportive research culture. A substantial proportion of staff are research-active, with the School and Campus supporting a number of research groups. Research activity is firmly anchored within Business and Management Studies (Unit of Assessment 17), with established strengths in business and social justice, sustainable tourism and heritage development, sustainable transformation of the cultural industries, and rural business resilience. We have strong regional and national collaborations and a growing international research profile.
The Role
We are seeking to make a number of senior professorial appointments to support our ambitious plans to further grow our research capability and enhance our reputation for world-leading research. The primary purpose of the role is to provide senior research leadership, experience and expertise to strengthen the University’s research environment and to support the development of world-leading research within Unit of Assessment 17 (Business and Management Studies), including in preparation for REF 2029.
The role will include structured mentorship of early- and mid-career researchers, contribution to staff and PGR CPD activities, support for grant development, and active engagement in collaborative research and scholarly leadership. Postholders will also be expected to work closely with School Research Leads, contribute to relevant School and Campus research committees, and support the delivery of agreed research actions, including the development of research events and conferences. Ideal candidates will have a well-established international reputation, an exceptional track record of research and partnership development, and expertise aligned with one or more of the research areas outlined above.
These appointments are fractional and fixed-term, offering flexibility to candidates wishing to align the role with a broader portfolio of academic or industry-based work. Appointments may be attached to either the York Campus or the London Campus, with opportunities to contribute across both locations as appropriate.
Key Requirements
Commensurate with a professorial appointment, the successful candidate will demonstrate an outstanding and sustained record of world-leading and internationally excellent research outputs, alongside a strong track record of research income generation. Evidence of effective mentorship, leadership, and collaborative research activity is also essential.
