Job Title: School Caretaker
Location: Tunbridge Wells
Contract: Full-time, Permanent (All Year Round)
Salary: £25,252
Hours: 8am-4pm (Monday to Friday)

We are seeking a reliable, self-motivated School Caretaker to join a friendly and well-respected site team. The role involves supporting the day-to-day maintenance, cleaning, and general upkeep of the school premises, as directed by the Facilities Manager and Site Manager.

The successful candidate will have practical experience in building maintenance and cleaning, along with a good understanding of health and safety requirements. Strong communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to prioritise tasks and work independently are essential. Previous experience in a school environment is desirable but not essential.

This role plays a key part in ensuring the school site is maintained to a high standard, providing a safe and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

General Duties
• Carry out cleaning duties, including emergency and spot cleaning, to maintain hygiene standards.
• Keep outdoor areas such as paths, drives, and entrances clean, safe, and free from hazards (e.g. snow, ice, litter).
• Empty internal and external bins and support recycling initiatives.
• Undertake basic repairs and maintenance tasks across the site.
• Ensure washroom facilities are clean, stocked, and regularly checked.
• Clean fixtures such as light fittings, following safe working practices.

Site Management
• Assist with routine maintenance, including upkeep of outdoor facilities (e.g. 3G pitch).
• Help ensure the premises are secure, including key holder responsibilities and alarm response.
• Receive, check, and distribute deliveries.
• Monitor and record meter readings as required.
• Support the efficient operation of heating, lighting, and energy use across the site.
• Report defects or maintenance issues promptly to the line manager.
• Carry out porterage and general site support duties.

Health and Safety
• Maintain a safe environment by ensuring walkways, stairways, and facilities are hazard-free.
• Assist with weekly fire alarm checks and maintain records.
• Ensure safe storage and handling of hazardous substances in line with COSHH regulations.
• Check fire safety equipment to ensure it is in working order.
• Respond to alarm activations and liaise with relevant services when required.

Additional Duties
• Be flexible to work additional hours or adjust shifts when needed, including occasional weekends.
• Assist with setting up and clearing down for school events.
• Attend training as required.
• Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role as directed by the Headteacher or Facilities Manager.
• Support safeguarding and promote the welfare of children and young people in line with child protection procedures.
