​EQUANS is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our team in Oxford. In this role, you will lead design activities from pre-construction through to construction, taking full technical responsibility for allocated projects. You will also provide complete design and technical support during tendering. Key experience required:Proven success managing all aspects of design and technical delivery on new build projects as a main contractor, specifically low to mid-rise traditional build apartment blocks.Experience leading design for major refurbishment, fire remediation, and re-cladding of Higher Risk Buildings (HRBs) is an advantage.This role may include line management responsibilities for Assistant, Senior, or Lead Design Coordinators.What You Will DeliverDesign and Technical ResponsibilitiesLead consultant and survey tendering and procurement processes.Conduct detailed design risk appraisals to support tenders.Review Employer's Requirements and help develop Contractor’s Proposals.Develop and manage comprehensive design and preconstruction programmes for tenders.Chair design team meetings with clear communication of deliverables and expectations.Manage consultant and survey appointments; monitor performance and timely delivery of high-quality design information.Review all design information for contract compliance, buildability, cost-effectiveness, and statutory requirements.Monitor design changes and manage the change control process.Obtain and integrate consultant design programmes into a detailed design delivery schedule.Track and report on design progress regularly.Collaboration and Stakeholder ManagementLead client meetings and design reviews during bid and preconstruction phases.Collaborate closely with the Commercial Team on cost validation.Liaise effectively with clients and key stakeholders to meet expectations.Ensure compliance with statutory matters including Building Regulations, Warranty, and Planning Conditions.Work alongside the Principal Designer to comply with the Building Safety Act and associated legislation.Obtain necessary licenses and permissions (e.g., Highways, Rail, Waterways, Street Works).Solve design and technical queries to support project teams.Process Improvement and Team DevelopmentMentor, guide, and support Design Coordinators.Motivate and contribute to the professional development of the design team.Stay updated with industry trends, regulatory changes, and new technologies.Support digital transformation, including BIM implementation and digital design review processes.SafetyEnsure all design information meets health, safety, and environmental regulations.Collaborate with the Principal Designer on statutory safety compliance.What We OfferCompetitive salary, plus company car or car allowance25 days annual leave plus public holidaysLife cover equal to 2x annual salaryEmployee discount schemes on major brands and retailersGym membership discountsCycle to work schemeHoliday purchase scheme2 corporate social responsibility days per yearExtensive learning and professional development opportunitiesAttractive employee referral rewardsInclusion in employee networks including Women in EQUANS, RISE (BAME), LGBTQI+, Working Parents, Young Persons Network, and Disability Network24/7 Employee Assistance Program and mental wellbeing app accessSkills, Knowledge and Experience (Essential)Strong understanding of major construction forms and detailing (RC, Timber, Structural Steel, Loadbearing Masonry).Professionalism with high discretion and emotional intelligence.Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with clients, colleagues, and consultants.Strong organisational skills, ability to multitask and work under pressure.Experience supporting single and two-stage tendering processes.Familiarity with JCT, PPC, and NEC contract suites.Proficient in design programming tools such as Asta Powerproject or Microsoft Project.Analytical mindset with attention to detail and problem-solving skills.Proactive, results-driven approach with ability to drive issues to completion.Strong teamwork and leadership skills, including mentoring and talent development.Knowledge of design requirements for procurement and construction sequencing.Awareness of applicable building legislation and industry standards.Commitment to continuous learning and development.Experience using Common Data Environments (e.g., Viewpoint).Education and Qualifications (Essential)Relevant qualification in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
