Trainee Sales Engineer Job Description
Overview
The Trainee Sales Engineer will support the sales team by developing technical knowledge of the company’s products and solutions, assisting with customer enquiries, and learning how to manage the full sales cycle. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for Engineering who wants to grow into a customer-facing commercially focused position.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Support
- Assist senior sales engineers in preparing quotes, proposals, and product selections.
- Support customer enquiries via email, phone, and onsite visits.
- Help maintain records, sales pipelines, and follow-up activities.
Technical Understanding
- Develop strong product knowledge across all relevant technical areas.
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Participate in product training sessions, demonstrations, and workshops.
Customer Interaction
- Shadow senior team members during customer meetings and site visits.
- Help identify customer needs and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Build positive relationships with new and existing customers.
Project Support
- Assist in coordinating project activities between sales, engineering, and operations.
- Support tender preparation and documentation.
- Track and follow up on open quotations and ongoing projects.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- GCSE English and Maths
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Eagerness to learn and develop commercially and technically
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience in a customer-facing or commercial role (e.g. placements, part time or internships).
- Basic understanding of CAD drawings or technical documentation.
- Familiarity with mechanical or fabrication processes.
Personal Attributes
- Driven, enthusiastic, and keen to build a career in technical sales.
- Confident speaking with customers and colleagues at all levels.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Positive attitude with a willingness to take initiative.
