A Vacancy at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The General Surgical Directorate is seeking a new full-time Locum Consultant in response to increased volumes of work and plans to further improve clinical services. This is a 12-month, fixed term appointment for the interim period prior to a substantive appointment taking over the post. The successful applicant would join a team of twenty gastrointestinal surgeons.

Applicants would be expected to have a broad training in general and laparoscopic surgery.

Applicants with experience in complex biliary work, point of care ultrasound or an interest in Major Trauma systems would be at an advantage.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion. Additionally, people with disabilities will be offered an interview providing they meet the minimum criteria for the post. The Trust operates job share and flexible working.

With the appointment of this post it is anticipated the emergency surgeons will undertake the following duties between them:
• Responsibility for the general surgical emergency “Front Door” Mon-Thur 0900-1700
• Admission and management of all general surgical emergency admissions Mon-Fri when fully staffed.
• Cover for the three “hot gallbladder” lists each week
• Participation in the on-call rota 1:16 0800-1300 (next day)
• An elective subspeciality of their choice

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance program. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee.

All future senior medical and dental appointments will be expected to work in collaboration across the Group and, irrespective of initial job description and job plan, be willing to work on more than one hospital site, dependent on service needs. Service location may change as our future models of care are developed by our clinically led networks through our acute clinical strategy. Some of the clinical procedures or services the appointee will be expected to deliver may be based at sites other than their primary site of employment.
