This new G7 role will lead the delivery of a central geography team providing cross cutting geospatial analysis and data for DfT.

Geospatial Analysis

This role will be responsible for the delivery of spatial analysis across transport modes that brings geographic insight to decision-making. They will ensure the integration of geographical evidence to support business decisions and policies.
In addition, they will be responsible for ensuring all geospatial analytical outputs from their team are high quality and fit-for-purpose through applying best practice, policies and standards for assurance and reporting of geospatial analytical outputs.

Geovisualisation

The post holder will use cartography and geovisualisation techniques to present intelligence from cross modal transport geographic datasets. They will apply techniques for mapping geospatial data in effective and engaging ways, to add insight to policy development and delivery monitoring.
They will use Geospatial visualisation to support DfT’s business needs in a variety of cross modal areas such as the DfT Integrated transport strategy, delivery of DfT’s Executive Committee remit, supporting public announcements, and meeting Ministers needs.

Geospatial data

This role will lead on the central provision of authoritative spatial datasets for use across DfT. This will include

  • Obtaining and providing authoritative spatial datasets from other organisations across government for use within DfT (ONS, Network Rail, GBR, NH, Transport Scotland, Defra, Environment agency) etc.
  • Leading the development of new authoritative Transport Datasets for use across DfT i.e multi modal data such as transport routing.
  • Working with Ordnance survey (OS) to lead the User Acceptance Testing of new and updated transport spatial data, ensuring they are fit for purpose and ready for use.
  • Working with OS to understand the OS ‘End of Life’ programme, delivering the support DfT colleagues require to manage the transition to the NGD (and other OS succession products).

Leadership of the DfT Geography community

In conjunction with the G6 DfT Head of Profession for Geography, this role will build the wider Geography community across modal areas in DfT to promote consideration of geospatial opportunities, ensure adherence to best practice and standards, and build capability across the organisation.
They will chair the DfT Ordnance Survey working group to support monitoring progress and departmental needs. They will escalate risks, issues and opportunities from the working group to the G6 and Chair of the DfT Ordnance Survey Delivery board.
