About the role:
This role will play an important part in promoting a safe, respectful and positive environment for learners. The Safer Communities Manager works closely with curriculum teams, behaviour learning mentors, safeguarding colleagues and external partners to support learners to reflect on their behaviour, rebuild relationships and develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed.
The role focuses on early intervention, behaviour development and strengthening relationships between learners, the college and the wider community. A key aspect of the position is helping learners understand the impact of their choices, supporting restorative conversations after incidents and encouraging positive engagement both on campus and in the community.
The postholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across campuses to identify emerging issues and support learners who may be experiencing challenges with behaviour or engagement. Through coaching and solution-focused conversations, the role helps learners develop stronger decision-making, resilience and interpersonal skills.
Alongside learner support, the Safer Communities Manager will build and maintain strong relationships with local residents, community groups and businesses. The role also involves working with police, youth services and community safety teams to support preventative work and coordinated responses where appropriate.
Another key part of the role is helping to develop opportunities for learners to engage positively with their communities through volunteering, social action projects and civic initiatives. These activities help learners develop a stronger sense of responsibility, belonging and pride in the areas where they live and study.
The role also contributes to wider work around behaviour, safeguarding and learner experience. This includes maintaining clear and accurate records of interventions, identifying emerging themes and supporting staff through advice and guidance on positive behaviour support approaches.
The successful candidate will have experience working with young people and supporting behaviour, engagement or personal development. They will be confident building relationships with a wide range of partners and able to work collaboratively with external agencies such as police, youth services or community organisations. Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to influence positive behaviour through coaching and constructive conversations.
A Level 3 qualification in youth work, community development, policing, social care, education or a related field would be beneficial. Training in restorative practice or trauma-informed approaches would also be advantageous.
