As the Structural Fellow you will join a strong and well-resourced team of structural operators (Dr Banning, Dr Hussain, Prof Kovac and Dr Rajendra), supported by an experienced team of nurses including our pioneering Structural Nurse Specialist. We deliver a comprehensive structural programme of >600 structural procedures per year maintaining our position among the highest performing centres in the country reflecting the composition, hard work, adaptability, and commitment of the entire multidisciplinary team (interventional and imaging cardiology, cardiac anaesthesia, stroke medicine, paediatric-congenital cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery).

The purpose of this post is to offer comprehensive training in structural cardiac interventions with primary emphasis on TAVI but also in all other interventions (mitral-clip, replacement and mitral valvuloplasty, as well as stroke prevention therapies (LAA closure, paravalvular leaks, septal defects) as well as to be part of the Structural Heart Team (MDT, patient data and anatomy analysis, procedural planning and structural clinics).

The appointee will be strongly encouraged to take part in focused structural research for which there are ample opportunities. Previous fellows have participated in research activity which has led to peer-reviewed publications.

12 month fixed term contract.

Applications are invited to join the University Hospitals of Leicester as a Fellow in Structural Cardiology. The post would be suitable for trainees who have already completed core training (at least 3 years of General Cardiology) and wish to sub-specialize in Structural Cardiology. Ideally the candidate would already have some experience in Interventional/Structural Cardiology. It may be undertaken by trainees who are already in a training post (as part of an ‘out of programme experience’)/ a post-CCT Fellowship.

The post is based at the Glenfield Hospital. Glenfield is a modern tertiary cardiac centre. There are 4 cardiac theatres, 5 catheter laboratories (3 intervention, 1 pacing and 1 EP), state of the art non-invasive imaging facilities including cardiac CT, MRI and state of the art echocardiography. The unit provides high volume comprehensive services in coronary and structural intervention, cardiac imaging, pacing, electrophysiology, heart failure, acute general cardiology. and is a very strong research portfolio.

The applicant will be expected to attend regular weekly Wednesday lunchtime and monthly Heart-Brain and monthly mitral MDT meetings where the management of patients with structural disease are discussed. Imaging consultants as well as cardio–thoracic surgeons and interventional, imaging and general cardiologists regularly attend.

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

Here at Leicester’s Hospitals, we believe our purpose is to deliver Caring at its Best. To achieve this, we need the best staff, the right attitude and lots of energy. Creating a hospital where patients choose to come and where staff want to work is important. We continue to develop our services and are always looking for talented individuals who can add value to the care we provide, grow with us, and share in our on-going success.

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of Consultant cardiologists Professor Kovac and Dr Roberts) for the duration of the appointment in order to get exposure to variety of complex cardiac interventions. The majority of the week will be spent in the lab undertaking procedures (4-6 sessions per week). There will be no regular ward commitment, but it may be that at times other duties will include the care of in-patients. The fellow will be expect to do 1 out-patient clinic per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory.

Opportunities will be dependent on the structural fellow’s level of experience and can be tailored to their interests. There is a well-developed structural intervention service, complex and high risk coronary intervention (CHIP) and CTO PCI service.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust pioneered percutaneous valvular intervention and septal defect therapies in the UK and worldwide. We are regularly involved in live transmissions to major UK and international meetings (TCT, PCR, CSI, ACI, ESC). We set up the inaugural structural Course: Leicester Structural Live in 2007. We have an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and are widely recognised for our world-leading and international excellent research. The high calibre of our academic endeavour was recognised in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) which ranked the University of Leicester 2nd for Clinical Medicine (UoA1), with 95% of our submission ranked world-leading (4-star) or internationally excellent (3-star). Research is a fundamental aspect of UHL work and the applicant would be expected to whole-heartedly embrace this ethos alongside interventional and clinical work.
