About SMART

SMART was founded in 1997 and provides safe spaces and support for people experiencing homelessness, rough sleeping or facing significant hardship.

Our services have adapted and grown over the years, but the people we support have always remained at the centre of everything we do.

Our vision is to transform communities so that everyone has the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential, participate in and contribute to all aspects of life.

Our mission is to provide safe spaces where vulnerable people can access support, empowering them to make positive changes and take control of their lives.

About the Role

As a Night Support Worker, you will help oversee the Night Beds service, supporting people who have previously been rough sleeping and have been allocated a safe place to stay overnight.

This is a waking night role, meaning you will remain awake and available throughout the shift to support residents, respond to incidents and ensure the environment remains safe and supportive.

You will provide a reassuring presence overnight, helping residents settle, monitoring wellbeing and responding to any incidents or safeguarding concerns.

Key Responsibilities

Provide overnight support to residents staying within the Night Beds service.

Maintain a safe, calm and welcoming environment throughout the night.

Build positive relationships with residents and provide a supportive presence.

Carry out welfare checks where concerns arise.

Respond to incidents such as anti-social behaviour, conflict or health emergencies.

Work alongside security staff where appropriate to de-escalate situations.

Escalate serious incidents to the out-of-hours Duty Manager when required.

Carry out regular site checks focusing on health and safety and resident wellbeing.

Maintain accurate records including incident reports, safeguarding concerns and shift handovers.

Encourage residents to engage with support services available during the daytime.

Provide basic refreshments such as tea, coffee and light snacks where appropriate.

Attend team meetings, supervision sessions and training as required.

Identify and report safeguarding concerns at the earliest opportunity.

Understand and manage risk in a residential environment.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

Is comfortable working nights in a residential support setting.

Has a positive and proactive attitude.

Can remain calm and confident when responding to challenging situations.

Demonstrates empathy, patience and strong communication skills.

Has good organisational skills and attention to detail.

Is confident using IT systems to record information.

Experience supporting vulnerable adults or working within homelessness services would be beneficial, but we welcome applicants with transferable skills and a willingness to learn.

Benefits

SMART offers a range of benefits including:

27 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 3 years)

Bank holidays (pro rata)

Generous pension scheme

Charity worker discount scheme

Access to health and wellbeing support services

Access to an online GP service

Regular reflective practice sessions

Development and training opportunities

All staff must be committed to safeguarding and protecting vulnerable people.

This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check and the receipt of two satisfactory employment references.

How to Apply

To apply for this role, please submit an application explaining why you would be a strong fit for the position and how you meet the criteria, along with your CV.
