The post holder supports the Dental Production Laboratory in the day to day clinical delivery prosthetic dental laboratory work to support patient treatment. This will include distribution and allocation of work in the absence of any of the laboratory management team.

The post holder will be responsible for providing technical laboratory support for clinical staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students for treatment of patients.

Responsible for undertaking the production of an extensive range of bespoke, complex, precision, implant retained, obturator appliances and conventional prosthetic appliances.

Direct management responsibility: Supervision of junior technicians and other laboratory staff.

· The post holder is responsible for achieving a consistently high standard in the production of precision and highly complex fixed and removable prosthodontics Osseo-integrated implant supported structures, using semi and fully adjustable articulators.

· Plan, design and construct diagnostic wax-ups for treatment planning and support the clinician in evaluating patients expectations and provide them with detailed information by communication with staff.



· Evaluate the quality, ensuring the dental prescription and items supplied from the clinic area are of sufficient quality to proceed with the construction of the appliance.

· Provide emergency service and repairs of appliances, for the patient.

· The post holder is responsible for the planning, design and construction of simple, hybrid, complex and evolutionary prosthetic appliances, in conjunction with Consultants and Senior Clinical Staff.

· Advise/assist Consultants, Senior and Junior Clinical Staff and Undergraduate students on technical/clinical problems relating to patient treatment plans which will often require consultations on clinic where patient’s wishes and expectations are expressed.

· The post holder is responsible for agreeing work schedules as appropriate with the Consultants, Senior and Junior Clinical Staff and Undergraduate Students concerned.

Clinically assist and advise Consultants, Senior and Junior Clinical Staff and Undergraduate Students with shade matching with regards to patient expectations.

· Construct Pro-scan radiographic stents and implant placement guides.

· Plans, designs and constructs diagnostic wax-ups, including occlusal splints, both hard and soft for treatment planning. TMJ analysis and occlusal rehabilitation cases.

· To produce technical appliances and study models for National and internal Postgraduate and Undergraduate examination purposes and training courses.

· To be familiar in the use of precision attachments.

· Plan, coordinate and prioritise daily personal workload to meet laboratory deadlines on a daily basis to meet service requirements.

· To contribute to the supervision and training of the technical work of junior laboratory staff and students.

· Assist in the routine day-to-day running of the laboratory and assist Undergraduate students, Clinical and nursing staff with enquires and the collection of completed work using the laboratory dedicated Microsoft Access computer system.

· To deal with internal and external telephone enquires routinely.

· Demonstrate restorative techniques to Undergraduates, Clinical and nursing staff, trainee technicians and Trust Visitors.

· The post holder should be familiar with working in a laboratory environment and utilise various specialised machinery within the laboratory including, heat generating equipment, compressed gases, ultraviolet curing lights, grit blasting, pressure forming equipment and various dust extraction units.

· Daily handles hazardous and toxic materials, fumes from materials, equipment vibrations and exposure to harmful dusts, very high temperatures and noise is part of the unpleasant conditions that the post holder works in.

· Always required to sit/stand at the bench for long periods of concentration due to the intricate nature and size of the restorations being constructed.

· The post holder may come into contact with bodily fluids e.g. saliva/blood and should be familiar with the cross infection control protocols to ensure the removal of saliva/blood when handling impressions and shade taking.

· Be required to lift up to 15 kg tubs/bags materials and replenish stock as necessary.

· Responsible for high quality of standard of work undertaken as stated in the Laboratory Operational Guidelines Procedures.

· To competently deal with patients who have oral facial abnormalities, cleft palate and special needs patients including oral cancer patients.

· To maintain in strictest confidence any patient or personnel related information, and it must be recognised that all patient related information is confidential whether formally recorded or not.

· To inform the Laboratory Manager or Deputies of any complaints or concerns about technical service provisions.

· Report equipment failure/malfunction immediately to Laboratory Manager or Deputies.

· To be involved in the research and equipment testing.

· Maintain general cleanliness, monitor and maintain the laboratory equipment including safety equipment.

· To undertake further training as required regarding new products and techniques.

· To utilise IT skills and undertake ECDL training as stated in Trust Guidelines.

· To participate in regular laboratory/clinic staff meetings and contribute to policy changes and procedures.

· To be involved in the audit and quality assurance activities of the Laboratory Department and Hospital as appropriate.

· To work in adherence to Health and Safety guidelines. Trust’s Health and Safety policy, MDR, COSHH regulations and all other Operational Guidelines within the laboratory to ensure the safety of the post holder and other staff within the laboratory.

The post holder is responsible for discussing with and advising Undergraduate Students on matters of techniques, restoration design and material selection.
