To perform general laboratory duties e.g. checking and cleaning instruments/equipment, recording temperatures, preparing media and reagents andassistance with stock control. Assist in the training of other staff and visitors and to cover the duties of other staff where possible. To help revive, prepare and dispatch items for the National Collection of Pathogenic Fungi. To undertake sterilisation and disposal of laboratory waste including collection of discard and waste material, loading and unloading discard bins to autoclaves, transfer of laboratory waste to designated collection/disposal areas This is not an exhaustive list. Essential role criteria State registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC BSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science Demonstrable post-registration experience in a relevant field Working knowledge of mycology laboratory procedures Practical experience in a mycology laboratory Experience with LIMS Evidence of continuing professional development Ability to work effectively as part of a team Good computer skills and sound knowledge of common IT programmes Evidence of ability to train others Knowledge of health and safety practices Able to provide judgement on a range of problems Communicate complex and sensitive information with peers and senior staff. An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships Desirable role criteria: Practical experience in a mycology laboratory Experience of working in a healthcare environment Able to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising own workload to set deadlines Selection process This vacancy will be assessed using a competency-based framework which will assess your qualifications, knowledge and experience and / or skills and abilities outlined in the essential criteria. In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to offer a remote interview. Knowledge, experience, skills and abilities will be tested at interview. Security Clearance Level Requirement Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Counter Terrorism Check clearance. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time.
