UKCIL – Personal support workers required working 2:1 for a young man with learning difficulties. He is non-verbal and has some sensory and emotional needs. He also has some complex and unpredictable behaviour and a real fear (petrified) of dogs whether loose or on a lead. He enjoys being out and about in the community and having fun.
The family would like to enrol a team of dedicated, compassionate and fun-loving Personal Support Workers/Enablers in the Stocksfield area to support a young man in/around his own home and in his local community, which can extend to Newcastle city centre and the Metrocentre. Days and times are flexible around school attendance; to be discussed at interview.
The successful candidates will take a person-centred approach to care, supporting the client’s independence, well-being, and choices, while providing essential personal, social, and domestic care. This young man is non-verbal but can gesture and use his communication book. Prior to covid he was very active and liked to get out and about in his community, more recently he has required additional support to regain his confidence in accessing these activities. He enjoys/has previously enjoyed many activities, including going out for food, attending the gym, swimming, going for walks, horse riding, trampolining, kayaking and getting out on his bike/ tandem. He enjoys eating and drinking at cafes and restaurants, participating in arts, crafts and woodwork with appropriate support.
Main Duties: To support this young man around his complex and unpredictable behaviour while teaching him some new valuable life and social skills, making good choices, building his confidence, self-esteem, danger awareness and promoting his independence. He will need support with toileting and meal preparation. In addition, he will need person-centred and patient support with socialising and encouragement to engage in any activities or interests this young man chooses.
Personal specification: A couple would be encouraged where each could have different skill sets. Car driver is essential. Physical presence with dominating personality, as Christopher will need strong encouragement to overcome some of his fears, anxieties and some members of the general public will require to be reminded that community spaces are for all and Christopher’s needs should be respected. Calm, patient, fun, honest and reliable, and with a caring nature. Punctual, trustworthy and able to respect confidentiality. Have a happy positive outlook and an outgoing personality Ability to both take instructions and use own initiative. Experience in health & social care desirable – awareness of Learning Disabilities, Autism and Mental Health needs.
Further Information: An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) will have to be obtained for the successful candidate (at employer’s expense). Training: Where it is required, such as in Health and Safety matters, practical training and guidance will be arranged, and the Personal Support Workers/ Enablers will be expected to attend. This will include safeguarding Adults/children, moving and handling, mediation awareness and any additional training specific to the client.
