To work as part of a team providing hearing screening for newborn babies by identifying eligible babies, communicating with parents & families, gathering & recording screening information & uploading data.
The post involves direct handling of newborn babies, contact with new parents, & working closely with maternity staff, neonatal staff & the audiology team.
The post involves some weekend & Bank Holiday working.
The main duties of this role are to undertake hearing screening on newborn babies using automated equipment. This post will involve direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents. It will involve gathering and accurately recording clinical and test data relevant to the hearing screening process. Screening takes place on maternity wards, neonatal unit, delivery suite, and in outpatient clinics.
Good communication skills and the ability to accurately update patient records in the national IT database and hospital systems with screening results are also crucial to the role.
The post requires being able to work well as part of a team and also on your own initiative. You must be methodical and well organised and it is essential for you to be able to prioritise your own workload to ensure that all babies are screened.
You must be able to remain calm when under pressure as you will frequently be required to cover busy wards and clinics alone.
You will be required to undertake a Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners to become a qualified Newborn Hearing Screener. This is a national qualification which non-professionally regulated staff working in some screening services complete. The Diploma involves a range of written, oral, and practical assessments and must be completed within 12 months of enrolment.
