14 month Fixed Term Contract - Apprenticeship

We welcome applications from individuals wishing to become an Apprentice and gain experience in the NHS. You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst working with an established team gaining valuable work experience and a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

You will be enrolled with a local education provider and will be required to complete your Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner qualification within the duration of the placement.

As an Apprentice Receptionist in our Cardiology Department, you’ll play a key role in supporting patients, families and clinical teams. Your day will include welcoming patients, managing enquiries in person and by phone, arranging and prioritising appointments, preparing notes for clinics, tracking records and ensuring accurate real time data entry on our systems. You’ll help keep the department running smoothly while learning from an experienced and supportive team.

You’ll develop strong communication, customer care and organisational skills, with the ability to multitask, maintain confidentiality and work calmly under pressure. A flexible, people focused approach is essential as you support technical, nursing, medical and administrative colleagues.

Typical decisions you’ll make include:
• Assessing the urgency of appointment requests and booking patients into the correct clinic.
• Identifying when patient information needs updating and ensuring records are accurate before and after clinic.
• Deciding when to alert clinical staff about patient concerns or waiting area issues.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must be:
• Aged 16+
• Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
• Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
• Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship

Qualifications and Skills Required:

• Good general standard of education
• 4 GCSE’s at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent) subject to the job specification
• Good standard of literacy and numeracy
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Good IT skills

From the job description:
• To provide a support service to the technical, secretarial, medical and nursing staff of the Department.
• To carry out receptionist duties, including prioritising and arranging appointments and maintaining the various appointment systems, identifying test requests and investigations, and co-ordinating the various clinics within the department.
• To deal with patients and external and internal staff enquiries in person or via the telephone, in a courteous and confidential manner and provide assistance as required.
• To ensure patients safety and well-being in the waiting area prior to them being called for their appointment and alerting appropriate staff to any cause for concern.
• To keep a log of telephone requests for investigations in line with department policy, prioritising these and ensuring messages are conveyed to the appropriate technical staff.
• To ensure appointment lists are maintained and prepared in readiness for clinical work.
• To obtain and prepare notes in readiness for clinics, investigations or at the request of staff within the Department.
