Are you interested in service improvement through the professional development of radiographers?

You would be working alongside the radiology management team, the Christie Institute for Cancer Education, the clinical skills team, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that the staff working within the Radiology department are given all the education and training they need to succeed. From inducting new starters (and following their pathway to being fully independent members of the team) to managing adherence to trust policies and procedures, as well as promoting CPD opportunities, and giving clinical insight when developing new systems. The clinical practice educator role covers all areas within the radiology department and would provide an excellent opportunity for somebody with outstanding clinical skills and a desire to improve clinical practice.

The radiology department plays a crucial role in the accurate and timely diagnosis of cancer patients, and our mission is to empower staff to use their best practice, and evidence based research, to provide the best possible patient-centred care they can. We have a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care, and the hospital employs cutting-edge technology and a multidisciplinary approach to provide the highest quality of cancer care.

This role is essential for the timely delivery of evidence-based, patient-centred, care within a varied and busy Radiology department.

You will be expected to work alongside senior management and departmental team leaders to promote high standards of care and ensure both new and existing staff are trained to plan, implement and evaluate this care. This includes maintaining accurate records, developing training and educational programmes, developing policies, and working clinically as part of a team.

Within an educational framework you will develop in-house education programmes, assessment based competency sign-offs, staff development programmes, and perform audits of education pathways. By working alongside the management team you will facilitate best practice by creating an environment conducive to learning.

For staff members on an individual level you will help in identifying learning needs, and will support staff members to develop the relevant competency and skills within their role. This will involve liaising with their line manager, and the team leader of the relevant area, to help manage issues of competency as they arise. You will also be part of the staff appraisal process, supporting staff to achieve their PDR objectives.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, and the diagnostic radiography department completes over 60,000 investigations each year. We are a vibrant, diverse, and hard-working team who prioritise patient care and high-quality imaging. We cover a range of imaging modalities including CT, MR, X-Ray, Ultrasound and Interventional radiology which allows to do routine scans, clinical trials, acute diagnostic imaging, and procedures such as biopsies, stent insertions and therapeutic treatments in conjunction with our nuclear medicine department.

As well as the advanced practice radiographers we have developed the scope of practice for all of our Radiographers to include assessing CT Thorax scans (performed with IV contrast) to look for pulmonary emboli and in plain film imaging Radiographers have also been trained to assess chest x-rays for NG tube position - removing those which are incorrect sited and preventing a 'never event' from occurring.

We are a department that is very proud to be involved in education and research, including giving staff at all levels opportunities to develop. We have supported staff members to obtain advanced degrees including MSc’s and PgCerts as well as NHS Leadership Academy qualifications and the in-house Christie Care Certificate. We also have ongoing apprenticeships for both BSc Diagnostic Radiographers and foundation level degree Assistant Practitioners.
