Job Title: Healthcare Assistant (Zero Hours)
Location: Westwinds residential home
Reports to: Senior Carer / Registered Manager
Contract Type: Zero Hours (as‑and‑when required)
1. Role Purpose
To provide high‑quality, person‑centred care and support to residents within a residential care home setting. This includes assisting with personal care, mobility, daily living activities, and promoting dignity, independence, and wellbeing. The role is offered on a zero‑hours basis, meaning shifts are offered according to service needs with no guaranteed weekly hours.
2. Key Responsibilities
Resident Care
Assist with personal care, including washing, dressing, toileting, continence support, and oral hygiene.
Support residents with mobility needs, using appropriate equipment and safe moving & handling techniques.
Provide assistance during mealtimes, including preparing simple meals, feeding (if trained), and monitoring intake.
Encourage and support residents to engage in meaningful activities, hobbies, and social interaction.
Monitor and record changes in residents’ physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all care plans, risk assessments, and safeguarding procedures.
Administer or prompt medication only where trained and authorised, following care home policy.
Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for residents.
Report any concerns, incidents, or hazards promptly to senior staff.
Documentation
Accurately complete daily records, charts, and reports in line with regulatory and organisational requirements.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with GDPR and data protection policies.
Professional Conduct
Work flexibly, accepting or declining shifts as available.
Maintain professional boundaries and respectful communication with residents, families, and colleagues.
Attend mandatory training and refresher courses as required (e.g., moving & handling, safeguarding, infection control).
3. Skills & Qualities
Compassionate, patient, and respectful.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to changing needs.
Awareness of person‑centred care principles.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
4. Experience & Qualifications (desired but not always essential)
Experience working in social care, residential care, or similar settings.
Care Certificate or willingness to complete it.
Training in moving & handling, infection control, and safeguarding (can be provided).
DBS check (required prior to starting).
5. Working Conditions
Zero‑hours contract: shifts offered depending on staffing needs.
Work may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and occasional nights if applicable.
Involves physical tasks such as assisting with mobility, manual handling, and personal care.
