An opportunity has arisen to join the Information Governance Unit at Staffordshire County Council within the Access to Information team as an Information Rights Officer.
We are looking for a motivated individual, who is experienced in freedom of information and managing a busy workload and can articulate themselves clearly verbally and in writing. This is a key specialist role, supporting the Council’s statutory compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR). You will play a central role in ensuring transparency, accountability and high‑quality decision‑making across the organisation.

Main ResponsibilitiesAs Information Rights Officer (FOI), you will:
- Lead and manage complex FOI and EIR requests, ensuring statutory deadlines and legal requirements are met
- Provide expert, legally compliant advice to services and senior managers on FOI/EIR legislation, exemptions and public interest tests
- Interpret and apply ICO guidance, statutory codes of practice and relevant case law
- Support investigations and responses to complaints, internal reviews and ICO enquiries
- Develop and deliver FOI‑related training, guidance and awareness across the organisation
- Monitor FOI performance, prepare management information and contribute to transparency reporting
- Work closely with colleagues across Information Governance to ensure consistent and effective information rights handling
This is a varied role, requiring confidence, sound judgement and the ability to communicate complex information rights concepts clearly and pragmatically.
The Ideal CandidateWe are looking for someone who:
- Has substantial experience working in an FOI / information rights role, ideally within the public sector and ideally a relevant professional qualification in information rights
- Demonstrates strong working knowledge of FOI, EIR and relevant UK statutory guidance and case law
- Is confident providing independent, authoritative advice to a wide range of stakeholders
- Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Is well organised, resilient and able to manage a demanding workload with competing priorities
- Is comfortable delivering training, briefings and guidance
