Quality & Governance In collaboration with the Quality Assurance Manager and Technical Manager: Maintain high standards of work and compliance with SOPs, UKAS, and accreditation requirements. Contribute to service development to ensure safe, effective and economical delivery. Participate in internal/external QA schemes, audits and corrective actions. Suggest and support implementation of quality improvements. Research & Development Support R&D and surveillance projects within the laboratory. Management of Staff Assist with organising and delivering training for staff and visitors. Financial Responsibilities Ensure resources and consumables are used efficiently. UKHSA Committees & Working Groups Participate in relevant committees or working parties as required. General Duties Ensure confidentiality and compliance with data protection requirements. Collaborate with other departments and external partners to support surveys and reference microbiology services. Undertake training to develop professional expertise and engage in performance review processes. Maintain CPD in line with professional or statutory requirements and contribute to improvements in working practices. Essential Criteria Educated to GCSE in English, Maths and Science or equivalent level of education in the aforementioned subjects. Recent, relevant experience of working in a laboratory including using Pre-Analytical techniques applicable to Bacterial, Serological or Molecular methods. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and experience of working in a lab environment using computerised data systems. Clear communicator with good writing, data entry and telephone skills ensuring accuracy. Problem solving skills, dealing with problems in a calm and efficient manner. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and able to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising own workload to set deadlines. Able to follow standard operating procedures. Good time keeping. Able to follow instructions written and oral. Well-developed physical skills, especially in the manipulation of pipettes and other laboratory equipment. Also, must be adept and precise when handling samples. Must be physically fit, able to lift and move racks, push trolleys and be able to use step stools or step ladders safely. An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships, both in terms of day-to-day working practices, but also in relation to management systems. An ability to maintain confidentiality and trust. Adaptable and willing to have a flexible approach to work. Desirable Criteria Experience of working in a health care environment. Awareness of a range of Health Services provisions. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. Knowledge of NHS issues. Understanding of Data Protection legislation. Live within a reasonable distance of the service site. Salary Information Grade: AO AO Inner: £29,613 - £30,266 per annum, pro rata This role comes with a Market Payment Supplement and will be applied to bring the minimum starting salary to £32,578 per annum, pro rata. If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms. Location This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Colindale, London NW9 5EQ. Please note hybrid working is not available for this role. Security Clearance Level Requirement Successful candidates must pass a basic disclosure and barring security check before they can be appointed. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Counter-Terrorist Check. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires CTC clearance.
