Lead a team that shapes North Yorkshire’s future North Yorkshire Council’s Planning Service is one of the largest planning functions in the country, delivering services across national parks, market towns, urban areas and everything in between.

We are now looking for an inspiring Planning Technical Team Leader to join our Planning Operations Team and lead a group of Senior Planning Assistants and Planning Assistants who support case processing across predominantly Development Management.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced people manager who thrives on developing others, improving processes, and delivering excellent customer service.

Technical planning experience is helpful—but not essential.

If you are a strong leader who can motivate teams, coordinate complex workloads, and support staff to deliver high-quality services, in a hybrid working environment, we will provide the technical training you need.

What you’ll be doing

•Lead, motivate, and support a dispersed team

•Oversee day to day operations to ensure cases are processed effectively, accurately, and on time.

•Allocate resources and manage competing priorities

•Provide advice and support on new ways of working, service processes and customer queries.

•Manage performance, conduct appraisals, identify training needs and recruit new team members.

•Ensure compliance with GDPR, data protection, legislation, and council policies.

What we’re looking for

We are especially interested in candidates with strong leadership and people management skills, regardless of whether they have worked in planning before.

•Proven experience leading or managing a team, supporting performance, and motivating staff.

•Ability to prioritise workloads, manage competing deadlines, and stay calm under pressure.

•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work confidently with customers, colleagues and partners.

•Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex or sensitive situations.

•Good organisational skills, with the ability to adapt to changing demands.

•Competent IT and data skills—comfortable using systems, reporting information and learning new technologies, as well as managing team members remotely.

Desirable (but can be developed on the job)

•Experience in planning, building control, local government.

Why join us?

•Be part of a large, supportive council with excellent career development opportunities.

•Work in a service where your leadership directly impacts the quality of development across the county.

•Access training, coaching and development to build your technical knowledge.

•Flexible working arrangements, with travel across North Yorkshire expected.

•A role that offers variety, challenge and the chance to make a difference.

•Generous Annual Leave: 28 days of holiday (pro-rata), increasing to 34 days after 5 years’ service – plus public holidays.

•Pension Scheme: Save for your future with our generous Local Government Pension Scheme.

•Fitness Discounts: Discounted Gym memberships at various gyms across the county.

•Lifestyle Savings: Enjoy a wide range of discounts at hundreds of popular high-street and online retailers.

•And more: Additional wellbeing support, employee assistance, and development opportunities.

Apply now

If you’re an enthusiastic, confident leader who enjoys developing people, improving processes and delivering excellent public service, we’d love to hear from you.

Technical knowledge can be taught—what matters most is your ability to lead a team to thrive.
