Primary Duties of the Position
This position requires an expert technician to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and overhaul complex systems on various combustion-powered vehicles, including conducting official Class IV/VII Ministry of Transport (MOT) inspections. A key function of this role is to assist and instruct patrons of the Auto Hobby Shop in planning and executing their own automotive projects, from basic maintenance to major engine and transmission repairs. The role also includes managing the shop's retail outlet by determining stock, providing cost estimates, selling items, and ensuring all work adheres to strict safety practices.
Qualifications & Key Skills required for this role
1. Knowledge of equipment common to the trade, i.e., front-end alignment and wheel balancing equipment, turning and grinding equipment for servicing brake drums and discs or rotor assemblies, and drilling and pressure bleeding devices.
2. Knowledge of technical practices in order to repair and/or overhaul major components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related electrical, electronic, hydraulic, fuel, and other assemblies.
3. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and policies to include environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials
4. Skill in the use of measuring instruments and test equipment, i.e., computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, oscilloscopes, multimeters, special feeler and dial gauges, etc.
5. Skill in using hand and power tools common to the occupation, i.e., wrenches, screwdrivers, insulated pliers, electric drills, pneumatic wrenches, and soldering irons.
6. Skill in troubleshooting defects, diagnosing malfunctions, and determining the kind and extent of maintenance and/or repairs needed.
7. Ability to maintain, repair, and overhaul complex major components and systems in
combustion-powered automotive vehicles, over-the-road trucks, and comparable vehicles without more than normal supervision
8. Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers’ repair manuals and technical specifications, schematics, engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts, and safety manuals.
9. Ability to instruct and assist patrons in all phases of automotive repairs.
10. Ability to determine type, quality, and quantity of merchandise to be stocked in a retail automotive center.
Qualification requirements:
Level 3 Diploma (City & Guilds, BTEC or similar) in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and Current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Nominated Tester with a valid MOT license

Conditions of employment for this role

3. This position may also be coded as mission essential.
4. You will be required to complete a 6-month probationary period.
5. Hours of work: 39.00 hours weekly. Fixed schedule: Mon-Fri 0800-1700. Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization’s flexible working policies.
6. Overtime may be required, and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
7. You must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
8. Must meet all certification requirements of the position.
9. May be required to guide and/or train lower graded employees.
10. Current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Nominated Tester with a valid ATA ID card.
11. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, UK valid driver's license is required for the position (Cat BE License).
12. Employee must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
11. May be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent.
