About the Role
Bhuku Ltd is seeking a motivated and engaging Literacy and Numeracy Tutor to deliver our Read2Succeed programme at HMP Swinfen Hall.
Read2Succeed is an innovative literacy development programme designed to help adults with low reading confidence build essential reading, communication and numeracy skills in a supportive and stigma-free learning environment.
The programme focuses on helping learners develop confidence, independence and practical life skills while encouraging engagement with education and personal development.
The successful candidate will work with prisoners who may have previously disengaged from education and will play a key role in helping learners rebuild confidence in their reading and numeracy abilities.

Key Responsibilities
The tutor will be responsible for:
• Delivering the Read2Succeed literacy and numeracy programme to small groups and individual learners
• Delivering phonics-based reading interventions to learners with low reading ability
• Embedding numeracy skills within literacy activities
• Supporting learners to develop reading confidence and practical communication skills
• Encouraging reluctant learners to engage in education
• Delivering sessions on prison wings, in workshops and in small learning spaces
• Maintaining learner records and tracking progress
• Promoting reading across the prison through reading initiatives and activities
• Working collaboratively with prison staff, the education department and library services.

Read2Succeed is designed specifically for custodial environments and focuses on removing the stigma often associated with literacy support.
The programme uses engaging, adult-focused themes including:
• sport and fitness
• work and employability
• entertainment and film
• everyday life skills.
This approach helps learners build reading and numeracy skills while developing confidence and motivation to continue learning.

Essential Requirements
• Experience supporting adults with literacy or numeracy development
• Ability to engage learners who may have previously disengaged from education
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to deliver engaging small-group and 1:1 learning sessions
• Willingness to work within a secure prison environment
• Ability to pass prison security vetting.

Desirable
• Teaching qualification (PGCE, CertEd, DET or equivalent)
• Experience delivering adult education or prison education programmes
• Knowledge of phonics-based literacy teaching
• Experience supporting learners with dyslexia, ADHD or additional learning needs.
Applicants do not need to be a qualified teacher, although teaching qualifications are desirable.
