Situated within beautiful gardens and grounds, the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) is a leading national centre of excellence and one of the longest-running charities and independent hospitals in the UK. Set in a stunning Grade II listed Victorian building, the RHN provides adult person-centred services across the entire care pathwayfrom post-acute rehabilitation to end-of-life carefor people with complex neuro-disabilities and their families. Hours: 15.5 hours per week, 10am - 4pm, 3 days a week: every Mon/Fri + 1 other day Salary range: £27,082 - £29,794 (increasing from April 2026) Contract type: Fixed term, 1 year Location: Putney, Southwest London Main Objectives of the role The Art Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operational running of the Art Room, supporting the delivery of a high-quality art service for residents with neuro-disability. Working under the direction of the Leisure and Family Services Manager and receiving regular clinical supervision from a named Occupational Therapist, the post holder will prepare and maintain the art environment, support individuals and groups to engage in meaningful art activities, and ensure all activities are delivered safely and in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. The post-holder will work collaboratively with Occupational Therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team to support residents engagement, wellbeing and rehabilitation goals. Key Responsibilities1. Service Delivery Support the planning and facilitation of individual and group art activities as directed by the Occupational Therapist or Manager. Prepare, set up and clear away materials and equipment for art sessions. Support residents to participate in art activities in a safe, inclusive and encouraging manner. Adapt materials and approaches appropriately to meet residents physical, cognitive and communication needs, under guidance. Maintain a welcoming, organised and accessible art environment. Contribute to exhibitions, displays and community events as required. 2. Art Room Management and Resources Be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and cleanliness of the Art Room. Monitor stock levels and inform the Manager when supplies require replenishment. Contribute to the cost-effective use of materials and resources. Ensure safe storage, handling and maintenance of art materials and equipment, including pottery and kiln equipment. Maintain equipment in good working order and report faults promptly. 3. Health, Safety and Risk Management Adhere to all organisational policies including Health & Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, Safeguarding, and Data Protection. Ensure safe use of art materials and equipment at all times. Follow kiln safety procedures and any relevant risk assessments. Report incidents, hazards or concerns in accordance with organisational procedures. Maintain professional boundaries and respect residents privacy and dignity at all times. 4. Communication Communicate effectively and respectfully with residents, families and colleagues. Maintain clear and accurate written records as required. Share relevant information appropriately with the multidisciplinary team. Actively listen and respond sensitively to residents needs. 5. Professional Responsibilities Work under the supervision of the Leisure and Family Services Manager and named Occupational Therapist. Participate in regular supervision and annual appraisal. Attend mandatory training as required by the organisation. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in response to service needs. Contribute positively to team working and service development initiatives.PERSON SPECIFICATION:Qualifications / Training Essential Background in Art, Fine Art, Design, Creative Practice or related discipline. Desirable First Aid or Basic Life Support training. Training relevant to working in healthcare or community settings.Experience Essential Experience supporting individuals or groups in creative or wellbeing-focused activities. Experience working with vulnerable adults or diverse populations. Experience working within a structured environment (e.g. healthcare, education, community or voluntary sector). Desirable Experience in neuro-rehabilitation, mental health or hospital settings. Experience supporting exhibitions or community art initiatives. Skills & Knowledge Demonstrable practical art skills across a range of media including painting, printing, clay work, crafts and basic computer-based art packages. Experience of pottery and kiln use, or willingness to undertake training. Ability to safely prepare, maintain and support the use of art materials and equipment. Good communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload. Understanding of professional boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding principles. Awareness of health and safety requirements in a practical environment. Interest in art as a therapeutic medium. Interest in neuro-rehabilitation, mental health or Occupational Therapy.
