We are recruiting Senior Advisors to lead and shape work on our future spatial planning service. These roles are central to our Sustainable Growth Delivery Plan and ensuring that our planning service is modern, resilient, customer‑focused, and ready for the future.

Key Responsibilities

Driving short‑term service improvements
• Lead practical improvements to how we deliver our spatial planning advice, focussing on efficiency, consistency, and responsiveness.
• Identify challenges in current processes, working collaboratively with colleagues to deliver quick-win improvements.

Shaping long‑term transformation
• Support shaping a future operating model for our planning services, ensuring alignment with existing and emerging priorities, legislation and expectations.


Leading and supporting digital innovation
• Support development and roll-out of digital tools that underpin planning work, ensuring they meet user needs and improve service delivery.
• Work with project teams to define requirements, test solutions, and support adoption of innovative systems.

Development and maintenance of operational guidance
• Lead work with subject experts and operational teams to create and maintain clear, consistent staff guidance.
• Translate policy, legislative changes and business needs into practical tools that support frontline delivery.

SupportIng new policy initiatives
• Advising on the planning service’s role in new national and local planning policies, including local plans, growth initiatives and environmental policy reforms.

Line management (where required)

Provide supportive and effective line management, focussing on capability, wellbeing, and performance.
Help build a positive team culture focused on learning, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

The team
You’ll join our supportive and professional Planning and Place Team within the Environment & Business Directorate. We lead on sustainable places and integrated environmental and spatial planning; technical leadership; and workforce planning for Sustainable Places.

In Environment & Business we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. While geographically dispersed, we excel at remote collaboration and work and collaborate in person at our offices across the country

Experience/skills required
We are looking for candidates with a broad range of skills and experience including:

Professional experience, or interest with transferable skills, of working in the planning and/or environment profession or sector (RTPI eligibility is an advantage but not a requirement)

An understanding of the organisation’s role in spatial planning and growth, and a desire to shape our priorities in this space
Experience of working in planning policy, development management or infrastructure planning at a local, regional or national scale
Project and/or programme management experience
The ability to prioritise a complex workload in a dynamic work environment
The ability to comfortably work in teams and independently
The ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing priorities.
Proven effective communication and excellent organisational skills
Line management experience would be an advantage but is not a requirement
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
