About us

University College London (UCL) was founded in 1826 in the heart of London and is consistently ranked among the world's top universities. With more than 18,000 staff and 51,000 students from over 150 countries, we are London's leading multidisciplinary university.

Our Office of the Vice-President External Engagement (VPEE) leads UCL's engagement with external audiences, enhancing our profile, influence and reputation. Through integrated activity across brand, marketing, communications, public affairs, media relations and events, we ensure UCL's public prominence reflects the excellence and impact of our research, education and innovation.

Joining our Media Relations team means playing a central role in communicating the value of UCL's work to the UK and the world.

About the role

As Media Relations Officer, you will be the first point of contact for most media enquiries, managing requests from journalists and coordinating responses across the university. You will play a vital role in shaping and sharing UCL's stories, ensuring they are delivered accurately, creatively and with maximum impact.

You will draft and proofread news stories and press releases to produce engaging content for UCL's news website and other digital channels. You will proactively identify opportunities for media coverage, issue expert advisories, arrange interviews for academic spokespeople and help ensure that key stories are reflected across institutional platforms.

The role also involves monitoring daily media coverage, preparing reports and updates for senior leaders, identifying potential reputational risks, and supporting the planning and coordination of media activity. You will build strong relationships with academics, journalists and communications colleagues, while contributing to wider VPEE activity, including supporting graduation ceremonies and Open Days.

This is an exciting opportunity for a communications professional looking to develop their career in a high-performing, fast-paced media environment at a globally recognised institution.

Please note, we have two roles available which are offered on a hybrid working basis and will be onsite at our London Kings Cross office 1-2 days per week.

Job Ref:B23-00189

Closing Date: 22-03-2026 - 23:59 (UK time)

Interviews are due to take place from 9th-10th April 2026

About you

You will have experience working in a busy news environment, such as a press office or communications team, with a strong understanding of how external media operates across print, broadcast, online and social platforms.

An excellent writer, you can convey complex subject matter clearly, concisely and compellingly for a range of audiences. You bring meticulous attention to detail, with strong grammar and proofreading skills, and the confidence to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.

You are highly organised, able to prioritise competing demands and manage multiple activities to meet deadlines. Comfortable using web content management systems and social media platforms, you are digitally confident and familiar with maintaining online content. Experience of image editing software or producing online publications would be advantageous.

Above all, you are proactive, collaborative and solutions-focused - someone who understands the importance of stakeholder relationships, keeps others informed, and plans ahead while anticipating and flagging potential challenges.
