Location: Abbey Gardens School, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 6SA
Hours: 37.5 per week | Monday to Friday | 8.30am – 4.00pm
Salary: £39,000.00 per annum (not pro rata)
Contract: Permanent | Term Time Only
Start: September 2026

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, growing SEMH-focused school as an English Teacher. You will spark curiosity and a love of learning through engaging lessons designed to motivate and challenge pupils with SEMH needs. You will personalise your teaching to meet individual social, emotional, and academic needs, supporting pupils to build resilience, confidence, and literacy skills in a nurturing, inclusive environment.

You will work closely with Learning Support Assistants, families, and external professionals to ensure each pupil’s journey is meaningful and impactful. Beyond teaching, you will contribute to curriculum development, assessment strategies, and school improvement initiatives, shaping the future of our English provision and leaving a lasting impact on both the pupils and the school community.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver tailored lessons for individual students and small groups, following the school’s curriculum and policies.
Monitor, assess and record student progress, contributing to school development priorities and improvement planning.
Develop, implement and review individual education and behaviour plans in collaboration with colleagues.
Create a safe, stimulating and well‑organised classroom environment, ensuring appropriate use and maintenance of resources.
Support students with challenging behaviour, promoting the development of self‑regulation and positive learning habits.
Work collaboratively with Learning Support Assistants, care staff and multi‑disciplinary colleagues to ensure consistent, holistic support.
Maintain effective communication with staff and home, ensuring continuity between school and home environments.
Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and meet all professional standards and regulatory expectations.
About You

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Proven experience teaching English to SEMH or SEND learners, including pupils with challenging behaviour
Strong knowledge of curriculum frameworks, assessment, and SEMH best practices
Calm, patient, and resilient, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Passionate about inspiring curiosity and fostering a love of reading and writing
Full UK Driving Licence
