Job summary The Old School Surgery is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Practice Nurse Manager to lead and support the nursing team within our well-established, partner-led GP practice. This role combines clinical practice with team leadership, ensuring patients receive high-quality, proactive and well-coordinated nursing care across the practice. The post-holder will support the development of clinical services, contribute to quality improvement and work closely with the GP partners and senior leadership team to maintain excellent standards of patient care. The Practice Nurse Manager will play a key role in ensuring the nursing team works effectively alongside GPs, Healthcare Assistants and the Patient Co-ordinator team, supporting clear communication and smooth patient pathways. About The Old School Surgery The Old School Surgery is a long-established GP practice serving approximately 7,500 patients in Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. Our multidisciplinary team currently includes: GP Partner Paramedic Salaried GPs Mental Health Practitioner Practice Nurses Physio Healthcare Assistant Midwife Patient Coordinators Clinical Pharmacists Administration Staff Dispensary Team The practice also works closely with colleagues across our Primary Care Network, including clinical pharmacists, mental health practitioners and physiotherapists. The practice is continuing to strengthen its internal team structure to ensure proactive patient communication, efficient patient pathways and sustainable services as our local population grows. Purpose of the role The Practice Nurse Manager provides clinical leadership for the nursing team, ensuring that nursing services within the practice are safe, effective and responsive to patient needs. The role supports the delivery of preventative healthcare, long-term condition management and treatment room services while ensuring the nursing team operates efficiently and collaboratively within the wider practice team. The Practice Nurse Manager will contribute to the ongoing development of nursing services, helping the practice respond effectively to evolving healthcare needs. Key outcomes of the role Success in this role will include: A well-supported and organised nursing team delivering high standards of clinical care Patients receiving structured, proactive management of long-term conditions Effective delivery of preventative healthcare services, including vaccination and screening programmes Strong collaboration between nurses, GPs, Healthcare Assistants and Patient Co-ordinators Clear patient communication regarding care plans, follow-up and ongoing treatment Contribution to high standards of clinical governance, safety and quality improvement within the practice Clinical responsibilities The Practice Nurse Manager will deliver the full range of clinical nursing services expected within a modern general practice, working within their professional competence and scope of practice. The role involves managing nursing clinics, supporting patients with long-term conditions, contributing to preventative healthcare services and ensuring patients receive clear advice and support to manage their health. While the specific mix of clinical activity may evolve over time in response to patient need and service development, the Practice Nurse Manager will be expected to maintain a high standard of clinical practice and support the nursing team in doing the same. The post-holder will undertake duties consistent with the professional responsibilities of a Practice Nurse and within their scope of professional competence, leading by example. The practice is particularly keen to strengthen its provision of respiratory care, including the proactive management of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The Practice Nurse Manager will play an important role in supporting the development and delivery of structured respiratory care within the practice, ensuring patients receive high-quality assessment, monitoring and education to support effective long-term condition management. Nursing team leadership The Practice Nurse Manager will support the effective functioning of the nursing team by: Providing professional leadership and guidance to Practice Nurses and Healthcare Assistants Supporting team development, training and professional growth Contributing to workforce planning and rota organisation within the nursing team Supporting the induction of new nursing staff Promoting a positive and supportive team culture Acting as a key point of contact for nursing matters within the practice The role will work closely with the GP partners and senior leadership team to ensure nursing services are aligned with practice priorities, whilst being hands-on and leading by example. Collaborative working The Old School Surgery places strong emphasis on team-based patient care. The Practice Nurse Manager plays an important role in supporting collaboration between clinical and non-clinical teams across the practice. This includes: Working closely with GPs to support coordinated patient care Supporting Healthcare Assistants in their clinical roles Collaborating with the Patient Co-ordinator team to ensure clear communication regarding patient follow-up and care pathways Supporting smooth patient flow through well-organised clinics and proactive communication This approach ensures patients experience well-organised, supportive and consistent care throughout their interaction with the practice. Clinical governance and quality The Practice Nurse Manager will contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical governance within the practice. This includes supporting: Safe clinical practice within the nursing team Compliance with infection prevention and control standards Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives Monitoring of clinical processes and identifying opportunities for improvement Maintenance of accurate and timely clinical documentation Professional responsibilities The Practice Nurse Manager will: Maintain professional registration and adhere to NMC standards Participate in continuing professional development Contribute to the professional development of the nursing team Work within practice policies and clinical protocols Support a culture of openness, safety and continuous improvement Person specification Essential Registered Nurse with current NMC registration Experience working within a primary care setting Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a clinical team Strong organisational and communication skills Ability to support and guide colleagues within a clinical environment Desirable Previous experience working in general practice Experience supporting or supervising other clinical staff Experience contributing to service development or quality improvement Familiarity with SystmOne Professional development The practice supports ongoing professional development and encourages staff to maintain and expand their clinical and leadership skills through continuing professional development.
