We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant to join our team at York Hospital. Applicants from single, dual or triple accreditation training backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to apply.
The post holder will carry out duties as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. This position is based at York Hospital.
York Intensive Care Unit currently admits around 1000 patients per year and is staffed to a dependency of 12 level 3 beds. It is a beautifully spacious unit. It has 22 physical bed spaces, of which 12 are side rooms. The Intensive care uses a high-performance Clinical Information System. There are good conferencing and staff facilities. Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to visit and view the Intensive Care Unit.
The post holder will carry out the duties of a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to deliver high quality patient care. This involves ward rounds, managing Critical Care referrals, and delivering the Critical Care services for the Hospital.
You will join 20 ICM Consultants who work within the Trust. ICM Consultants have a primary base at either York or Scarborough. 6 ICM Consultants are based at Scarborough, and 14 ICM Consultants are based at York. Both Intensive Care sites work in a collaborative way. All the ICM Consultants conference weekly for the Grand Round meeting (M&M / Clinical decision meetings) in which ICU patients and complex decision making occurs. All the ICM Consultants conference monthly for the ICU Governance meeting.

Work base location: York Hospital
Average weekly programmed activities: 10 PA
Up to 2 additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder based on separate agreement.
The current York Intensive Care rota represents 5.29 PA of Intensive Care work.
Job plans can be created for single stream applicants. Job plans can be created for applicants from different dual speciality backgrounds. There is a requirement to provide cross-site work in line with current patterns within the department.
The standard core SPA 1.25 PA week.
There may be an opportunity to increase SPA, where need arises, in line with departmental objectives.
The on call is based on a 1:14 ICU rota.
The post holder would participate in the on-call rota at York hospital. The on-call rota is currently defined as a Category A rota. Unpredictable on call is determined and subject to the NHS standard hours monitoring exercise.
Individual job plans.
Single stream and dual job plans can be discussed and tailored with the Clinical Director. Job plans will become operational on commencement. All job plans are agreed in line with the Trust’s job planning principles.
