Consultant Clinical Scientist – Head of Treatment Plannning

Manage the provision of the Treatment Planning service to Radiotherapy, acting as lead specialist in the field; Provide scientific oversight and lead the development of clinical radiotherapy physics and play a leading part in the research and development programme for the department.

Maintain an awareness of developments in the field of radiotherapy and radiotherapy physics. Seek to introduce innovative practice into clinical use.

Provide leadership to the Radiotherapy Physics Team in conjunction with the Head of Department and ops team.

Take responsibility for the Aria RadOnc Information System and act as system manager for Aria and Eclipse.

The primary duties are in support of the Radiotherapy Service. The work entails a high degree of autonomy and scientific ability in the field of Medical Physics. The postholder will be an Operator as defined by the Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations (IRMER17).

1.1 Maintain oversight and leadership of the Radiotherapy Treatment Planning and

1.2Take responsibility for the accuracy and applicability of external beam radiation data used in the treatment planning process.

1.3Provide MPE advice and guidance on IRMER for Radiotherapy treatments.

1.4Oversee the commissioning of highly specialised treatment planning and oncology information system, software and hardware upgrades, ensuring that the data and software is configured to model the radiation dose to meet agreed specifications

1.5Provide expert scientific advice to the Radiotherapy Clinicians, Radiographers, dosimetrists and physicists on highly complex problems in radiotherapy physics, including in situations where there is a lack of published evidence, requiring exercise of scientific judgement to implement patient care.

1.6Acceptance test and commission new software upgrades, e.g. new builds and algorithms, and inform and train users in the changes. Commission, risk assess and implement new functional elements of the planning software which may include decisions on safety-critical issues.

1.7Propose technique developments to radiotherapy and oversee the scientific implementation of new techniques

1.8Investigate incidents, errors and anomalies related to radiotherapy and ensure that the reports and action plans are made as appropriate.

1.9Contribute to the development of clinical protocols as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team.

1.10Represent the Department on Trust and other Committees, providing expert advice on scientific and scientific computing matters.

1.11Manage the computer equipment replacement and development programme. Specify new equipment (hardware, network, software) and manage the procurement process.

4.7Participate in national and international scientific activity to contribute to the development of best practice in the Department and the Trust.

5.1Maintain HCPC registration as a clinical scientist and registration as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE)5.2Keep abreast of scientific and technical developments in Radiotherapy

5.3Attend and present at scientific meetings, seminars and courses as part of CPD and to further the work of the Department.

5.4Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant standards and regulations, particularly IRMER2017
