Veterinary Surgeon – Independent Mixed Practice | Northumberland Coast | Up to £80,000

A thriving independent veterinary practice in a popular market town in beautiful Northumberland is looking to welcome a Veterinary Surgeon to its growing, friendly team. Established in 2017 with just two nurses and two receptionists, the practice has grown steadily into a six-vet team supported by five nurses, a kennel assistant, five receptionists and a dedicated administrator.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a vet seeking clinical autonomy, excellent work–life balance and a genuinely supportive team culture within a modern, well-equipped practice.

About the Practice

This independent practice was built from the ground up with a clear vision: to prioritise exceptional veterinary care and client relationships rather than sales-driven services. As such, the practice maintains a refreshingly client-focused environment—there’s even no retail merchandise in the waiting room.

The team prides itself on delivering friendly, personal care to loyal clients who truly value the service provided. Every team member is invested in the success of the practice, creating a collaborative environment with high job satisfaction and strong team spirit.

Located just two miles from a breathtaking Northumberland coastline, the practice sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering an exceptional lifestyle with beaches, countryside and outdoor activities right on the doorstep.

Caseload

The practice operates primarily as a small animal practice, with some farm animal work (beef and sheep). Farm work is seasonal, with busier periods in spring and autumn and quieter times focused on small animals.

The team also works closely with Marine Life Rescue, and vets occasionally assist with the treatment of distressed seals, adding a unique and rewarding dimension to the role.

Applications are welcomed from:
• Small Animal Vets
• Mixed Practice Vets with a farm interest
• Vets who would like to incorporate some farm work during the day or occasional OOH cases

The practice is flexible with rota design and happy to tailor responsibilities to suit clinical interests.

Vets with special interests or advanced certificates are encouraged and fully supported.

Working Pattern & Work-Life Balance

• 20-minute consultations
• Last consults at 6:00 pm
• 6-week rolling rota
o 5 x four-day weeks
o 1 x five-day week
• 1 in 6 weekends
o Saturday consults 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
• A long weekend (Friday–Monday) every 6 weeks
• Part-time applications welcomed

This structure provides excellent work–life balance, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the spectacular Northumberland coastline and countryside.

Facilities

The practice is modern and well equipped, enabling vets to work up cases thoroughly in-house, including:
• Dedicated dental suite with handheld dental X-ray
• Ultrasound scanner
• Digital radiography
• Well-equipped in-house laboratory
• Spacious consult rooms and clinical areas

The team is always keen to invest in equipment and services that improve patient care.

Team Culture

This is a genuinely sociable and supportive workplace where colleagues enjoy spending time together outside of work.

Regular team activities include:

• Friday drinks after work
• Sponsoring and supporting the local rugby team
• Pub quizzes
• Team dog walks
• Potluck lunches
• Social nights out
• An annual Christmas party
• Summer beach BBQ for staff and families

And yes — you can bring your dog to work.

Salary & Benefits

• Salary up to £80,000 (DOE)
• Five weeks’ holiday + bank holidays
• Holiday allowance increases annually to six weeks
• Generous CPD allowance with support for certificates
