About the Role and our Ideal Candidate
This is a role that shapes lives. Based in the Housing Advice, Information and Assessment Service, you will act as the first point of contact, focusing on signposting approaches to the service and conducting initial Triage Assessments. You will support service users requiring general housing advice, those needing support to live independently, and those who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.

As a Triage Officer, you will provide holistic and personalised advice. Your daily duties will include describing available services, assessing eligibility, and advising service users on their housing options. You will take a proactive approach to assist clients in accessing statutory and non-statutory services, including education, employment, money advice, and support services.

You will manage a caseload to meet the needs of this client group, taking appropriate action to help them maximize their income and opportunities for accessing and maintaining accommodation. Crucially, you will be responsible for identifying risk and taking appropriate action to mitigate against excessive or avoidable risk, referring to advisers or senior managers where appropriate.

About you

We are looking for a customer-focused individual with a desire to resolve issues and find solutions to maximize options for service users. You will have an understanding of housing options specifically Part VI and VII of the Housing Act 1996 (as amended 2002), Homeless Reduction Act 2017 and Renters Right Act 2025, Homeless Code of Guidance, Renters Right Act 2025, security of tenure, welfare and Housing Benefits.

You will have experience in providing information, advice, and guidance to members of the public in a complex environment. You must be able to communicate complex information clearly and concisely, both in writing and orally, adapting your style to different people and situations.

You will be skilled in collecting and extracting relevant information to accurately identify the nature of a service user's enquiry. You must be able to understand anxieties and motivations, managing expectations through support and negotiation to achieve the best outcomes. Additionally, you will be organized, able to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines, and capable of maintaining accurate case records using appropriate I.T. systems.

About Us
We are proud of our strong local identity, vibrant neighbourhoods and commitment to delivering services that make a real difference. Sutton is one of London’s greenest and safest boroughs, with excellent schools, thriving businesses and a strong sense of community. It is a place where people want to live, work and invest, and where we are determined to ensure everyone has access to a safe, secure and affordable home.

Housing is central to that mission and we are now looking for four senior leaders to help us stabilise, modernise and transform. We have come through a major transition and are embedding the Sutton culture across teams who have previously worked under a different operating model. Our priorities are clear: providing safe, secure and affordable homes; reducing the use of temporary accommodation; strengthening systems and compliance; and working in partnership with Sutton Housing Partnership and other stakeholders to put residents first. If you want to lead change with purpose and pace, this is your moment.
