The Roads Economics, Modelling and Evaluation (REME) division helps to deliver the Department’s objectives, by providing analytical advice to the policy directorates leading on policies and programmes for Strategic Roads (the motorways and larger A-roads), and for Traffic and Technology across all roads.

The G7 transport modeller will work closely with our Strategic Roads policy teams, and National Highways, to help deliver the multi-billion pound Road Investment Strategy (RIS), and to plan the forthcoming future road investment strategies. In REME, you will help to set the strategic direction for, and scrutinise, the modelling and appraisal of the largest-scale major roads schemes. REME is a dynamic and friendly, inclusive team of 23 analysts including economists, transport modellers, social research and evaluation professionals, located across London, Birmingham and Leeds.

This G7 transport modeller role involves working on projects with policy colleagues across Strategic Roads and with National Highways colleagues, in liaison with a network of analyst and other professional colleagues across the Department. It combines strategically guiding modelling for substantial programmes of scheme development, with advice to inform faster-paced policy work. The particular focus in the coming year will be the Lower Thames Crossing scheme, as it proceeds through vital Business Case stages and funding decision points, for which leadership to develop and guide the transport modelling and appraisal will be vital to successful policy advice. The role involves providing analytical leadership, as well as supporting the development and management of one HEO analyst. You will have opportunities to contribute to Directorate Group, and Department-wide activities, shape and develop changes to TAG guidance, and enhance the Department’s internal modelling capability. You will work closely with a thriving community of multi-modal transport modellers and appraisal specialists.

Your duties will include:

  • Ensuring the transport modelling and appraisal used to inform decisions to deliver the largest road schemes in the current, £27bn Road Investment Strategy (RIS) meets DfT’s evolving policy needs and analytical This includes advising on the robustness and suitability of the planned modelling methods, and appraisal approaches, in the Business Cases for the largest road schemes, at key decision points. A particular focus will the Lower Thames Crossing project, as it proceeds through vital Business Case decision points. You will provide leadership and guidance to the development of the transport modelling and appraisal, as it prepares for the next Business Case stage, including updating travel demand information, and innovative analysis of resilience impacts.
  • Developing transport modelling and analytical methods through leading edge research and development of modelling methods, as part of the DfT’s Appraisal & Modelling Strategy, in liaison with analyst colleagues across DfT.
  • Advising on modelling questions, approaches, and results, to inform emerging policy decisions on a range of strategic roads issues as they evolve.
